It would be good to hear more detail on how EVA's service was bad? A few years ago my wife and I flew to Vancouver from Toronto, where we got on board the connecting flight with EVA. Aside from a few hours wait at both Vancouver and Taipei for the flights, we thought both the ground and cabin crews were pretty good on both legs of the return journey. The only reason we go with Cathay now is because they have a direct flight from Toronto to Hong Kong (one of my favourite airports), and then a fairly quick connection to Bangkok. Other than that, we liked the way we were treated by the employees of both EVA and Cathay.

I flew AC first time through Hong Kong. The HK airport is beautiful. It's one of my favorites as well.

I enjoyed the service on AC although after flying EVA, I prefer EVA's schedule.

EVA offered a better fare but the transit through Taipei is draining, (three hours), and there isn't much to see or do. On the first leg I arrived at 5:30 AM as the airport is slowly waking up and on the return flight, I arrived after most services had closed around 9:30 PM. There was no place to get a good meal before that long flight back. There was a Burger King, but it was on the other side of Immigration.

The service is about the same as AC, the food was slightly better on EVA. The EVA flight attendants had a very charming, gentle and calming disposition. (Economy)

There were more families and children on the EVA flight, but they slept most of the night.

I have just booked another flight on EVA, only because they offered a better fare than Cathay, by $200, and beat AC by $400.

Cathay, has similar flight times to EVA, with shorter layovers in Hong Kong, which to me are preferable.

With AC, I arrived in Bangkok around 10:30PM. I felt like I just wasted a day in transit. On the return, I arrived back in Vancouver around 10:00AM, too tired to stay awake the whole day.

With EVA, I had plenty of rest on the flight over, arrived around 11:30AM, was up the whole day and went to bed around 10PM. On the return, I arrived in Vancouver around 7:30PM, went to bed, woke up the next day feeling less displaced. The flight times helped me adjust and the jet lag only lasted a day or two. With the AC flight times, I was messed up for over a week. Not blaming the airlines here, just saying the flight times on EVA worked for me.

since quite some time, EVA has same competitive deals for BKK - Vancouver.

I don't know if those are available on the website as well, but most travel agents in Thailand can tell you about it.

be aware though, that EVA is EXTREMELY strict when it comes to cabin luggage !
