I live in some apartments and to get the internet we each have a wireless router put in our apartment that we connect to.

All the passwords are the same and the internet so far has been ok at some times during the day and impossibly slow at others.

This makes me think someone is using my internet connection (easy to do as all passwords are the same).

I have tried to change the password but cannot get the admin page of the modem to load up. It says to type in an ip address in the browser but I get page not found (any ideas?).

Is there a way to see if anyone is connected to this router?

It could be that everyone in the apartments is using the same connection anyway but they wouldnt do that would they, otherwise it would be mega slow (which it is).

Thanks for you help.

what's the brand and type of the router?

why haven't you changed the password the first day you started using this router?

are you sure you even need a password? maybe it's wide open for everybody to use.

Yes they would. If the apartment arranged the connection for you, odds are they have one connection you are all sharing.

when you got your router the passwords to access the router are written in the manual. Usually something like: admin - password or admin 12345

Your router ip is 192.168.1.1 or something similar? The router access password has nothing to do with the wifi security. Open your router

and check inside if security is set up. (WEP, WPA, WPA2). You will find it under Wireless Connection.

But please mention your router brand!

If you don't know your router ip - go to start ---> run ----cmd --> and type into the dos window ipconfig/all.

When I go to the 'Wireless Network Connection' list in Windows XP the network for this apartment is listed. It says 'Secutiry-enabled wireless network'. When I connected to it I had to enter a password.

The make of the modem is SMC Networks Wireless ADSL2 Barricade g (SMC7904WBRA2).

The address in the manual for setup is http://192.168.2.1 but when I enter this in a browser I get nothing, just 'waiting for http://192.168.2.1' in the status bar.

I want to change the password that is used to connect to this connection but don't know how.

You are surely using the same line as everyone else in the building and so when everyone is home, ie evenings, you will all share the bandwidth. If someone is downloading a movie or other heavy use, you will surely suffer.

You should ask the landlord if you have a private line or shared line. If shared, better get your own private line. ToT and True has options as cheap as 590thb/month.

Anytime you share password with someone else you are not secure.

Further if the Wifi is set up with WEP encryption I could crack it in 2 minutes and gain access to your network and potentially your computer.

WPA is the minimum encryption you would use for a Wifi network.

let me add a question: how is your "router" connected? Is a phone line plugged in or only a LAN cable from a wall outlet?

Phone line.

Each apartment that has an internet connection has their own network which is the number of their apartment.

Anyone know how I can change the password for the network for my apartment?

You need to speak with your landlord. IMHO you have a shared connection.

Just in case: heres a MANUAL which you can download as pdf

Anyway please run ipconfig/all

and post it if you want some good advise!

It looks like this sample:

I may be wrong but believe you have to have a physical connection rather than wireless to access admin functions. Seem to recall something of that nature in manual but did not have wireless at the time so never tried. That is a rather old modem/router.

Thats not the hardware in your apartment. Visit your building manage

172.16.x.x is a private range , so it is possible if the WRBA is operating as a modem that 172.16.64.1 is his router LAN address.

I remeber crushdepth talking about how his old apartment had modems in each unit , but thay had a DSLAM in the office.

I suggest trying 172.16.64.1 and see if you get the router login screen - if you can login ( depending on the password ) , go the the router status page and see what the WAN IP is.

172.16.64.1 did not load a page but I am not connected to the router using a cable. Should I try to get a cable? There wasnt one in the box.
