I'm on a TOT 3mb/512 connection, when testing with Speedtest I get about 0.9-1.2Mb down. However testing with adslthailand.com I get 2.6Mb down. Both tests domestic (Bangkok), why the difference?

Any ideas?

Called contention ratio.

International bandwidth is expensive, so most ISP's share the available capacity.

Domestic bandwidth is cheap and plentiful, so no sharing (or very little).

In short, you have a (for thailand) cheap home-package of 3Mbps speed.

Domestically you'll get full speed (ADSL has overhead, so 85% of rated speed is practically full speed).

Internationally, the 3Mbps is shared between you and maybe 30 other subscribers. Not everybody is online simultaneously, nor are they using full capacity of their line. So when the network is properly set up, even at heavy usage you should get 40-50% of rated speed. off-peak times will see speed go up to 80% or more...

If speed is important to you, it would pay to go to a more expensive package, where the international bandwidth is shared less heavy.

I am planning to try out the Internet Corporate Speed package (at home) from PacNet at 4096/512 Kbps. It costs 6.000 per month but I plan to use it to download TV programs via a Slingbox (from Holland) which I ant to try and install when I am home next October. Anyone has any experience with PACNET?

I asked my IT guy from the company for advice and he talked to most of the carriers and they admit that the cheaper packages are indeed the speed they advertise but shared with up to 200 (!!!) users sometimes, depending on the neighborhood (mine is Sathorn), so good luck. The PACNET should not be more than about 15-20 users. I got 2 months trial period before the 1-year contract kicks in.
