Import Car Into Thailand - A Loophole?

Have read a few posts regarding the difficulty and cost of importing a car into Thailand. All looks to be very true sadly. However, last i heard, from a friend in Thai, is that if you are able to put the car into your spouse's name and she/he lives in the country where the vehicle is registered for a certain period of time (maybe 1 year, or 18 months) then you might be able to bring the car into thailand (in her/his name) without having to pay any tax.. This might not be true but would be grateful if anyone could shed some more light...

A pipe dream my newbie friend. Research Thai excise, import duties via google. No such distinction anywhere on waivers. I found bottom line 135% assessed valuation as determined by arbitrary customs official. Mountains of red tape and endless potential deal killers. The place that does allow is Maylaysia under the Maylaysia my second home, program. Just buy the boring Thai offerings and live with it as I will have to do also.

It is indeed possible to bring in the car together with the household goods if moving to Thailand. This applies to returning Thais and foreigners with a work permit alike. A heap of paperwork has to be done and it is still subject to ridiculous import duties. I am not aware of anyone who actually did it.

I looked into this and was told no such option existed..

Missus had lived outside Thailand for years, car could be in her name, were prepared to wait for timing.. None of them applied.

Car part are free from taxation (so I heard) I know this man who imports classics and he sent 1 part like the engine to malasia and a other to thailand the bodywork, he then imports the engine. Heard it said in a bar so know how reliable this is.

Its not that hard to get the car in.. Now how do you get a license plate for it ??

in 1989 i bought a brand new mercedes in nevada and it has been garaged there a few years now....

perhaps there is hope that i could bring it to thailand without having to pay too much taxes.... lol
