I have the 2 MB service with TOT in Pattaya, yet was getting dial-up speeds during peak hours and not much better during off-peak hours. A call to TOT got the usual solution: A callback and then nothing. This happened 2 days in a row. So, I got up off my geeky tush and decided to troubleshoot the problem myself.

Solved in 10 minutes. (Yeah, whatever, flame me for not doing it in the first place - TIT).

Anyway, change the DNS server AT YOUR MODEM/ROUTER to:

Preferred DNS Server: 208.67.222.222

Alternate DNS Server: 208.67.220.220

(From opendns.com. You can google for other DNS servers yourself - any would be better than TOT's)

Reboot your MODEM/ROUTER

My gripe is that solving this problem required the most BASIC of effort and skill for any techie. <deleted> can't TOT fix their problem themselves? Amazing Thailand.

Anyway, my speed is now 1334 kb. I am happy. Hopefully, this helps other victims of TOT's "uber" IT.

Check your modem/router manual for how to change your DNS settings or just hunt for it. Typical factory settings are (type in URL of browser: 192.168.1.1)

This with the DNS servers like OPEN DNS and the speed increase at downloads confuses me a bit.

A DNS server only resolves the address but then it is done with the job and after this follows the long download of the data. The only speed increase could be when resolving the address. In addition to this if you use a DNS server not belonging to your ISP you might be even slower when the internet connection to this other DNS server is slow. The connection to your ISP is the fastest. A DNS server is somehow like a phone book. You have the name and look for the number. And with the number you can call. What you talk then and the talk quality is not the problem of the phone book anymore. And if you enter the number directly you do not need a phone book (DNS server).

Further your system buffers DNS information. You can look at the information with ipconfig /displaydns on the cmd level (Start - > Run then type cmd hit Enter and type ipconfig / displaydns. If you want to predefine the contents of this buffer just enter the DNS in the HOSTS file. So if you enter for instance the DNS of yahoo.com there the system will always look there for the DNS and not at any DNS server - it cannot get faster. Downside is that if the address of yahoo.com changes you will get an error that they site could not be found - you have the wrong number like a wrong phone number. And if you forgot the entry in the HOSTS file you might search for a while to find the problem...

Ya, a forum search THAT WORKS would be a really great idea. Sorry, but I rarely get any relevant results when using the search feature here, and at times it flat-out refuses to work at all - returns an error message. But that's OK, I get a search error message sometyimes just when hitting the "View New Posts" link.
