Well, SVCD max resolution is 480x480 (or 480x576 for PAL). The number of pixels displayed by your screen is 786 432 versus the 230 400 of the SVCD (PAL SVCD has 276 480 pixels). Now depending on your TV, the number of pixels can be as low as 345 600 (for NTSC) or 414 720 (for PAL). So, assuming you're running PAL SVCD and a PAL TV, there's only a 1,5x increase in the number of pixels from what's on the disc to what's displayed on your TV. However, displaying it on your monitor requires a 2.8x increase in number of pixels. Obviously a lot more artefacts are going to be displayed. Add in the fact that the TOTAL bit rate for SVCD can only be up to 2 756 Kb/s (DVDs go up to 9 800 Kb/s), and there's not much to do to make them look better. Perhaps you can install a different codec; some are more efficient than others. Another trick would be to decrease the resolution of your screen before playing; going to 800x600 means that there won't be so much 'junk' displayed.

Most computer monitors are way better resolution than the average TV.

(Leaving aside LCD and Plasma models)

SVCD is a pretty lousy standard and you are only seeing what is there. :)

Try down loading DivX. It has a good compression algorithm, that plays well on screen and TV. Most new DVD players will play it OK and the file sizes are very small, considering the quality of playback. Another good program is "Xilisoft DVD Ripper Ultimate ". Good luck.
