You might need to translate your name into Thai, if the child will get your last name. They will register the name in Thai, not English.

required documents are: http://www.dopa.go.th/English/servi/birth.htm

Thanks Mario. Does this mean getting my thai friend who speaks near perfect english writing my name in thai on a copy of my passport OR do i have to get an official translation of my name into thai from a translation office then have it certified by the Australian embassy?

Just have your Thai Friend translate it, no need to have it legalised etc. At most they will want him to write his own nam on the copy too, as the translator.
