Thailand's tsunami warning system to be established in one week

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said here on Tuesday that Thailand's tsunami warning system would be established within one week.

The prime minister told local journalists here this morning before the cabinet's weekly meeting that the country's tsunami early warning system would be linked to major media networks, particularly TV and radio stations, and local telecommunication systems, namely mobile phone networks.

"I believe our country's tsunami early warning system will be initially launched within one week. It will connected to major media and telecommunication networks throughout the country", he disclosed.

Mr. Thaksin also said that he was satisfied with the performance of authorities concerned in the urgent warning of a new possible tsunami disaster and evacuations of local residents and tourists in the country's six southern Andaman Province at risk of the feared new massive waves late last night after a strongest earthquake, with its epicenter in the Andaman Sea, hit the Indonesian Nias Island, nearly 700 kilometres from the country's Andaman coast to the West.

The earthquake, measured at 8.5-8.7 on the Richter scale, took place at around 11:09 p.m., causing the Meteorological Department to issue an urgent warning of the possibility of a new tsunami.

The urgent statement of the Meteorological Department, issued through official and media channels across the country, suggested an immediate evacuation of local residents and tourists in the country's six southern Andaman Province to highlands.

The provinces, which were hit by the first series of massive waves on 26 December, include Phuket, Phang-nga, Krabi, Ranong, Trang and Satun.

The local residents and tourists were, however, evacuated back to their residences at around 3:00 a.m. today after the Meteorological Department was confident that there would be no new giant waves in the areas and withdrew its tsunami warning.

The tremor was, nonetheless, reportedly felt in Hat Yai of the country's southern province of Songkhla, causing panic among local residents and tourists, especially those in high buildings, who rushed from their residences and buildings until the tremor ended.

I heard him talking on the English news today and he said " Thailand's complete warning system will be in place soon".

Sending SMS messages through his own company's network is a "complete warning system"?

Yeap, you understand it right! A man with a big mouth and a peanut brain.

"I believe our country's tsunami early warning system will be initially launched within one week. It will connected to major media and telecommunication networks throughout the country",

The nation writes :"Just like during the December 26 quake and subsequent tsunami, mobile phones became useless again on Monday and this complicated evacuation efforts”

errr ... how are we supposed to receive an SMS with tsunami warning if all mobile networks are down ?
