KING'S HEALTH

'No cause for concern'

By The Nation

Published on October 17, 2009

Princess Chulabhorn says HM in no danger, mainly under rehabilitative care His Majesty the King's health condition is no longer worrying, said his daughter HRH Princess Chulabhorn Walailak

"Now there is nothing to worry about his heart conditions and lung infections," she told officials at Thai embassy in Germany during her visit there.

Before his ongoing recovery from illnesses, HM the King had high fever and so weak that he was unable to walk. The conditions have improved after the first week of treatments, at Siriraj Hospital where he was admitted on September 19. "Now there is nothing to worry about his heart conditions and lung infections.

"What the doctors are taking care of now is a rehabilitative treament. As it's usual for elder people who are in beds for treatments for many days, they may not be able to walk stably. That is the only reason still keeping him in the hospital, as for the symptoms, the doctors say that there is nothing dangerฌous [to the King's health] now," she added.

During the past 27 days, up to 588,198 people have signed getwell messages for His Majesty the King at the Siriraj Hospital.

Yesterday alone, the number of the well wishers stood at 18,798.

Because the king has been much loved and revered, a large number of people showed up at the Siriraj Hospital to wish him a speedy and full recovery each day.

Yesterday, many people including Nabil Hussain Ashri, Saudi Arabia's Charge D' Affairs to Thailand were seen looking up to the Siriraj Hospital's Chalermphrakiat Building where the king was seeking treatment.

German Hans Gerhold said he had deep admiration for the Thai king.

"He's my role model. He has done so many things for other people espeฌcially Thais. And he has outstanding abilities in many areas including environment works and agriculture," Gerhold said.

"His Majesty has made great contributions to the country. He's much more than the father of the nation," New Politics Party leader Sondhi Limthongkul said yesterday after he signed the getwell message at the hospital.

The government is planing grand celebrations to mark His Majesty the King's 82nd birthday in December, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said yesterday.

Activities to mark the special occasion will begin on December 1 and are expected to continue until December 13, Suthep said.

Suthep, in his capacity as chairman of the organising committee, said the celebrations would be held in three areas during December 17 Sanam Luang, the Royal Plaza and the adjacent area, and Rajdamnoen Avenue.

Suthep said state agencies and the private sector would be involved in organising the celebrations, which will include firework displays

HM'S HOSPITAL UPDATE

Long Live the King

Emotions and "Long Live the King" overwhelm Siriraj Hospital as HM the King makes first public appearance in weeks.

HM the King has made his first public appearance since getting admitted at the Siriraj Hospital over a month ago, coming down to the hospital's ground floor to pay homage to his late mother and King Rama V on the occassion of the Piya Maharaja Day.

It was an emotional scene as many well-wishers wept as His Majesty made his appearance on his electronic wheelchair to place garlands for the portraits of his late mother and King Rama V.

A lot of well-wishers were at the hospital today as it is a public holiday. Tears rolled down their faces as emotional "Long Live the King" were uttered and echoed on the hospital's ground floor.

The monarch looked alert and considerably in satisfactory condition. The appearance followed a tough week for the Thai people as rumours about his health caused panic selling or even speculative selling in the stock market.

The government has urged the public to follow the official announcements which report that the King's conditions have been improving. An inquiry has been made into the sources of the rumours.

His Majesty was marking Piya Maharaj Day, which honours the late king.

The King then paid his respects to Her Royal Highness Princess Sri Nagarindra, the Princess Mother,

before her statue at the nearby Centennial Pavilion. A large number of well-wishers, many brimming

with tears of joy, hailed "Long Live the King" during his 20-minute stay in the grounds of the hospital compound.

HM the King makes his first public appearance in weeks, coming down to Siriraj hospital's ground floor to pay homage to his late mother and King Rama V on the occassion of the Piya Maharaja Day Friday.

To the delight of all Thais, His Majesty the King yesterday appeared in public at Siriraj Hospital, where he has been receiving treatฌment for 34 days.

Watched by a large crowd of well-wishers, the monarch, in a bright blue shirt and a pair of dark trousers, travelled in a wheelchair from the Chalerm Phra Kiat building towards a statue of King Rama V, his grandfather, in the nearby Siammintr building, to pay his respects.

His Majesty smiled at the crowd and paused briefly to chat with some of them along the way. He then returned to the Chalerm Phra Kiat building to continue his treatment.

The Royal Household Bureau issued its 33rd statement on Thursday, saying His Majesty the King's condition remained good as he had gained strength and could now sleep and eat normally. Medication would be further administered, and, at a later stage, supplementary food would be given to the monarch, said the statement, which the bureau said was the last concerning details of his symptoms and doctors' treatments.

At the Asean Summit in Hua Hin, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien-Loong signed a get-well message at a hotel hosting the event, giving "the highest respects to His Majesty on behalf of the Singapore government and people", and "wishing him good health and speedy recovery."

People began converging at Siriraj since early morning, because they had earlier heard that the monarch would show up, coupled with the fact it was a public holiday.

Among those who signed get-well messages were a representative of Prince Albert of Monaco, the newly-appointed Thailand national football team coach Bryan Robson and all members of the national squad, and freshly-crowned Miss Teen Thailand 2009 Stephanie Avanik and two runners-up.

Others who signed get-well messages were 117 novice monks from a temple in Chachoengsao province who were ordained to make merit to His Majesty. Robson said he realised how Thai people revered and respected His Majesty and admired the way they showed their respect for him.

Somthawil Chuang-arun, 78, who came with her daughter and grand-daughter, said it was a blessing for her as it was the first time she had seen His Majesty.

UPDATE

HM the King to leave hospital soon

His Majesty the King is to stay in hospital for a further period to receive physical therapy after a prolonged stay in bed but is expected to be discharged from Siriraj Hospital soon.

HRH Princess Chulabhorn Valailak said that HM the King, who was admitted to the hospital about a month ago, has had little exercise over the past weeks.

"It appears his muscles are weak after being in bed for a long time. The physical therapy will need to be a gradual process," the Princess told a gathering of Thai nationals in Italy, which was broadcast through TV poll on Monday night.

HM the King can now walk with the aid of a walker, the princess said, adding that the activities were not fun but boring.

According to the princess, HM the King apparently sometimes argued with his therapists.

"I understand that for HM the King being in hospital for a long time is very boring.

However, he is very strong and determined to do the exercises several times a day.

HM the King is expected to return to the palace soon," the princess said.

"HM the Queen and Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn are at his bedside everyday to see the development of his condition and give him moral support.

"We've tried many ways to make HM the King smile," the princess said, "such as telling him funny stories, showing him movies, and having him listen to good music."

HM the King recovering

By The Nation

His Majesty the King's health has significantly improved and he is expected to return to his palace soon, HRH Princess Chulabhorn Valayalaksana said Friday.

The princess said her father had already been able to stand up by himself.

"He has been getting much better. I believe he will return to his palace soon," the princess said.

The beloved monarch, now in his early 80s, has been receiving treatment at the Siriraj Hospital since September 19. Since then he appeared in the public for the first time on October 23 when he paid respect to statues of HRH Princess Mother and King Rama V.

Over the past month, hundreds of people have been flocking to the Siriraj Hospital to pray for his speedy recovery.

Supreme Court President Somchok Sukharom and Chaipattana Foundation secretary general Sumet Tantivejkul were among high-profile figures signing the get-well messages for His Majesty at the hospital yesterday.

"I wish him a quick recovery," Sumet said.

According to him, the illness has not prevented His Majesty from working for the country and his people. For example, His Majesty has still followed up on the progress of his royallyinitiated projects.

"HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has just informed him that his initiative to have a dam built inside a cave in Mae Hong Son's Pang Ma Pha district is successful. Thanks to the initiatives, locals have water for use throughout the year," Sumet said.

LONG LIVE THE KING

His Majesty celebrates Loy Krathong

By The Nation

Published on November 3, 2009

Their Majesties the King and Queen last night floated their krathong in the river near Siriraj Hospital.

Many royal members joined Their Majesties in celebrating the Loy Krathong festival.

After Their Majesties floated their krathongs, HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn and his son, HRH Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti, HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, HRH Princess Chulabhorn Valayalaksana and HRH Princess Srirasmi, the Royal Consort of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, followed suit.

This was a rare event.

Hundreds of loyal subjects lined Siriraj Hospital's walkways to greet the Royal Family.

Since being admitted to hospital on September 19, His Majesty has appeared in public only twice, the first time on October 23.

Although His Majesty remained in a wheelchair last night, he smiled and waved to his people. After floating his krathong, he viewed a floating procession of decoratively lit boats along the Chao Phya River.

His Majesty also held a camera.

The Royal Household Bureau said His Majesty's health has been improving. More than 20 million people have signed get-well messages for him during his hospitalisation.

Many well-wishers braved Bangkok's notorious traffic to sign the messages at the hospital. Hundreds showed up yesterday, among them high-profile figures like Serb Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic.
