I can't work this out, the connection is there but it's terrible, I use utorrent and all of my torrents flick from red to blue/green, my speed status icon is a yellow exclamation mark, I've tried portforwarding.com but my modem router isn't in the list.

Does anybody have an idea how to resolve this?

Thanks in advance!

Yes i had the same issue, for the wi-fi you need to turn it on first, check if that led is switched-on on your modem, then for the P2p program you are using you must check what ports is using, then login as administrator on your modem and go on the portforwarding section, make sure everything matches and it should works just fine

I am currently not on my pc and i am using a mobile phone to read/write here, the connection is also c#ap, so...Reason for edit: deleted double post

Thanks for your quick response, I can't even find the port forwarding section once logged on to the modem, how do I locate that?? :)

I had exactly your same issues so i can assure you is there, make sure you login on your modem as administrator or you will have a very few options available(check instructions manual for details, i can't remember what was the password right now), i think it was under the "NAT" menu, just browse all of them if you can't find it

Posted
But I just can't even see a tab or drop downb menu anywhere mentioning ports :)

Can you see some empty fields where it says UDP/TCP? (these are the ports)

Edit: and again, if you are not logged in as administrator, some menu/option will just not be there

When I got to 192.168.1.1 and log in to the modem there is no option to log in as admin, is that what you mean?

Sorry i haven't got my pc here to give you exactly the right information, but i can clearly remember that you can login as simple user or administrator on that modem, the details are on the booklet provided by True with that modem, do you still have them? Otherways i can forward them to you as soon as i get back home, but you might have to wait a few weeks for it sorry! so you might be able to get the right things before that

If you're logging into your modem with a username & password via http://192.168.1.1/ then you'll have administrator rights already - that's not your issue.

Under Advanced Setup there is a NAT option.

You need to click on that & choose edit details next to the SUA Only option. Once in there you need to enter the port number you are using for torrents and the IP address of the machine you are using.

Call true or who ever is your ISP and have them walk through the modem settings with you

Log in to 192.168.1.1 which is your modem's configuration settings and double check all your settings are the same as true is telling you over the phone

Save the settings

Something is set wrong in your wireless router configuration

By walking through the wireless configuration with True tech support, all your settings will be configured correctly and it will work just fine

This is what I'm seeing, no NAT option :)

Nio, thanks for your suggestion, I tried calling True tonight, at 20:18 but their lines close at 20:00 :D I'll try again in the morning but I thought someone might know how I can solve this problem tonight :D

A few points to note:

Do not setup your router through wireless. Connect the laptop using the ethernet cable to port 1 of the router.

Default log in for admin rights, use

username = Admin

password = admin

To do port forward, you must first setup your comp with a static LAN IP address, and then setup the NAT section of your router to port forward to this LAN IP address

I have never yet set up a wireless router without tearing my hair out. I am no IT specialist but I am pretty clever otherwise. Can any IT person explain why the industry has not solved making this a less painless process? Everything else seems to be plug and play.

My brother used to work in the IT helpdesk for a large company. He used to tell me when users asked him for help, he would go to their work space and tell them to go for a coffee. The problem was usually fairly simple to fix, often as simple as cleaning the fluff and dirt on a mouse ball. he would do it and when asked what he had done he would just say it was a bit technical to explain and go back to him office. I asked him why he didnt explain it and allow the user to self help in the future? His answer probably answers your question. It kept him in a job.

Just had the True engineer here, he simply said 'too much traffic' and that the only solution was to use 1 computer, not 2 with the modem, alternatively he said I could use another router(I thought the zyxel was a modem/router anyway!??) so I popped out my spare router and he said that was fine, I asked him if I could just plug it all in and it would work without any setup and he said yes, I plugged it all in and it didn't work.

Totally stuck.

Looking for an English speaking, preferably English person to come round my house, someone with a great knowlege of computers and networks, who can set me up nicely with normal internet on 2 computers, I would have thought that having a 4mb connection that it could handle 2 computers, especially as others have mentioned using 10+ computers on a single modem router...

Anybody know of anybody?

EDIT/ in the next couple of weeks I will be wanting to backup all the data on my 2 computers, reinstall the latest version of windows 7, install all of my important software, create a proper and full backup of both computers OS's & settings and set up my modem/router for optimum usage, is there anybody English in the neighbourhood?

I am English speaking and could do what you are after, but I have no idea if I'm in your neighborhood since I don't know where you live.

Well, the internet seems to have calmed down since I started using only 1 uTorrent client at a time, however, when I'm sending files on my home network I am completely unable to use the internet on the wireless laptop, is there something still preventing me from using my network freely? Is there a switch somewhere that just opens things up a bit? Or am I consigned to switching from one computer to the other instead of running smoothly with both - as I was with my previous ISP...

Have you configured ur uTorrent not to use up all the bandwidth?

Zyxel router provided by True is a pain in the butt. Its totally crap imo , will be changing mine next week.

I have played around with the settings in uTorrent but have found that nothing really makes a difference, what modem/router are you looking to buy? And why is the Zyxel so bad? Is it just low quality or does it have limited settings?

On uTorrent if u set ur max download speed as 0 which is unlimited , and 0 for upload u wont be able to use the internet at all.

The 1 port WiFi ZyXEL router which they hand out quality and settings is very bad.

Im looking at getting the D-Link DIR-855 or the Belkin N1 Vision

I haven't set it like that, I've limited myself to within what frequent speed tests claim are my limits, however, even if I limit both computers to under half of my speed limit I still can only use one or the other :)

I have to say, that Belkin N1 Vision is a nice thing tio look at, it's quite cheap too - in the UK... How much is it here? And what makes it any good? Just a question, not being sarcastic :)

Just found this review:

The good:

Embedded LCD offers loads of information at a glance; guest SSID and password let you share your Internet connection without compromising data or privacy; easy setup; configuration utility is newbie-friendly; Gigabit Ethernet ports; slick, attractive design.

The bad:

Slow throughput; very expensive.

The bottom line:

The Belkin N1 Vision router makes great strides in user-friendliness, but drops the ball when it comes to performance.

Specifications:

Networking type: Wireless router ; Connectivity technology: Wired , Wireless ; Data transfer rate: 300 Mbps

I wonder where these reviewers would put the Zyxel? :)

I couldn't even find the 1 port WiFi ZyXEL router on the internet at all even at their own website.

I haven't read much on the N1 Vision but thanks for posting the review. Looks like i'll stick to the D-Link DIR-655/855

So, if I bought a decent wireless modem/router, I could bring it home, plug it in and use it without any complex setting up? All I need is my ISP username & password, is that correct?
