October 19, 200916 yr I have seen a number of threads by people who have tried bringing cars in to thailand, not one which was not a horror story.
October 19, 200916 yr hazz, i rather think that most of those stories related to permanent imports, not temporary as the OP wishes to do. I think you will be able to do this, but (without having read the link above) i think you might have to return to Malaysia. Edited October 19, 200916 yr by Lancashirelad
October 20, 200916 yr I regularly drive a Malaysia registered car into Hadyai via Danok from KL. Take the North South Highway- approx 5kms from the border, there is a duty free shop called CTC on the left. you can get your car insurance for driving around in Thailand there. You need to prove ownership documents of your car there and also at the Thai Customs and Immigration. Have your car registration card ready. I dont know about foreign registered cars but just my contribution, maybe it works the same way as well. Just beware of Mlsian customs and immmigration-probably lots of coffee $ to make the world move : ) Good Luck!
October 20, 200916 yr With the huge cost involved. I gotta ask WHY? Either rent a car here or just buy one then sell it again when you leave. You could probably get a guaranteed buy back from the 2nd hand (tent)dealer. I know people that have done this with bikes.
October 20, 200916 yr the owner will need a Carnet de Passage (sp?) from the UK to enable the crossing of borders for a car such as his.
October 20, 200916 yr I think the limit is driving a personal import in country is for 6 months, after that full importation taxes (circa 200% of the value that Thai customs place on the car - forget any book valuation you consider is right) apply. The OP must enjoy Thai paperwork as much as driving his own car.
