You mean providers of WiFi in internet cafes etc?

If SiSaket is anything like Kantaralak 50k down the road then you will find that internet cafes rarely if ever give wifi signals. They are there mostly to let school kids play games on cheap desktops riddled with viruses! On the other hand you can use them for 10 baht an hour if you want to just surf the web/e-mails. I do not recommend doing online transactions and do not plug any of your own storage devices into their desktops; I had to throw away my infected flash card (not tecchy enough to clear it other than run a virus scan which wrongly said it had successfully disinfected my card of a trojan. All the folders disappeared and it would stop me creating new ones)

Probably better to ask if the TOT (monopoly telecom provider) signal is any good in SiSaket (I suspect it will be slow but reasonably reliable - I have just moved into a new house on the Si Saket to Kantaralak road and the TOT signal rarely disappears although is slow by UK standards, which is a major improvement over having stayed at TW's house in soi only 2k away - the signal there would disappear for hours and soemtimes days.

If the signal is good where you live then a TOT landline and internet line will cost you about 600 baht a month. I hope TOT's signal is ok for you because there is probably no alternative if you want your own household connection, other than an expensive 1500 baht a month mobile card.

If you are an occasional user and i have scared you off the internet cafes (I should not have - they have their uses provided you recoignise the health risks) then I guess you could enquire at the local hotels - or maybe ask an internet cafe to install a wireless router and share the capital outlay with them.

Hello, please let me tell you about my experiences in Sisaket. There's the TOT and TT&T, but the TT&T are only using TOT's net and server.

They always have promotions like two MB for 650 baht, including tax. They always charge you 100 baht for the telephone line. The connection to your house is always free, the wiring in your house is about 600 baht. Mostly a wireless phone is part of the promotion. The company TOT is located on Ubon road.

They also provide three MB, but this is only working fine if you're not more than two km away from their company. In your case, a house near the Big C could be too far away for three MB.

I think the provided two MB is really fast enough, the connection is okay for my opinion. You'll have to go to the company to make a contract. It could take about five days to one week for the installation. Welcome to Sisaket. If there's anything else, please don't hesitate to ask me. Mike

Hi lctgggggg...

We live 6Klm further out (past BigC) on highway 226. Have had TOT adsl for a couple of years --- the service is pretty good. This service is 2M/512--- which usually delivers about 1.6/400 --- this is for connection within Thailand ----- for connection outside Thailand it drops to half this --- or worse. Thanks TOT.

A friend a little further out recently installed CAT cdma service --- he speaks highly of it. The bandwidth available depends on your distance from the nearest CAT tower.

He informs me that he does not suffer the same degradation of service for overseas connections as do I with TOT --- can anyone explain why ??

He previously had TOT satellite service --- expensive and pretty grim.

Welcome to Si Saket.

TOT has ADSL and leased lines. Right now TOT has a problem with it's international gateway which they said will be fixed soon. Also TOT is slow between 8pm - 2am and at times unusably slow. CAT has ADSL which is better than TOT. I have heard True/ubc has cable service.

Hi again lctgggggg

Just a few interesting notes on doing business with TOT. When we were building 3-4 years ago i visited the TOT office in Si Saket to be told that ADSL was not available in our locality. Foolishly I accepted this advice at face value and tried in vain to obtain alternatives (TT&T and CAT). I was mislead by the fact that 2 other farangs nearby already used the dreaded TOT satellite service. This seemed to support what I had been told.

Fast forward 6 months --- whilst visiting a nearby neighbor I learned he had been using TOT adsl for 2 years. :D

Armed with his phone number I returned to the TOT office --asked again about ADSL in our locality ---was again told "no have". I produced the phone number of my neighbor -- the lass looked it up on her computer and replied "Oh-- you want the same as Khun Fritz?? It will take 2-3 days" :)

Problem # 2

No phone number available! On our line run there were no phone number!! As I was now speaking with the installation techs I learned this was actually true (only for my locality --I assume). After a couple of weeks (waiting for an existing customer to die ??) the boss rang me to tell of a nearby customer who could not pay his phone bill -- I struck a deal with this guy and obtained his phone number. Two days later ADSL is in and running.

Wierdness #3

When ordering the ADSL I asked for the fastest available at that time (2 M) to be informed that I could not have. Only 1meg. OK... thought I -- we are too far out from the exchange. 1 M will have to do.

(Now I must tell you ..... time has proven that the internet tech guys in TOT in Saket are terrific!! They always respond brilliantly. Cannot do enough to help. The boss should get a medal.)

During one tech visit (our distance from the exchange exposes us to weather etc. problems) he carried out a line test -- I asked the result -- to learn it could easily support more bandwidth. Back to TOT office to again ask for 2m.

--- "Oh -- yes sir -- no problem you have been with us for more than 1 year!"

Wot???

"We don't give 2 M to farangs till they have been with us for at least 1 year!"

"By the way the extra bandwidth is free for the next year" :D

One of the main pleasures of living in Thailand is the never ending surprises you encounter. I learn every day!

Welcome to Si Saket.

I should not have said that the TOT signal where I now live is reliable. TOT obviously heard me and turned the wick down so that I have had 24 hours offline and had to mix it with the internet kids again! Still - back on line tonight - dodging around dodgy internet signals and poorly serviced satellite TVs is one of the 'experiences' of Thailand.

My wife cannot see why I tear my hair out over such trivia and one day I will be a shoulder-shrugger too - they put mai pen lai in the bottled water you know.

I know what you mean as my G/F tells me to calm down when I curse it during Skype to my family & freinds, not sure how to reply to you all for your help& by the way where do you go to immigration to get your permission to stay stamp. Have contacted CAT who tell me they have to test the signal so it looks like TOT land line, Once again many thanks for your help as you all seem nice people & enjoying Sis Sa Ket. Many thanks. Geoff
