google chrome enters my gmail password for me automatically after i enter the first letter. I have tried going to the settings and chose the box which says NOT to remember passwords and never to do autofill

what can i do to stop it doing this?

Does Chrome have a privacy setting to "Never Remember History"? If so, you might try that setting.

you need to clear your browser cache, cookies and history. should work after that.
