Featured Replies

Looking to make a jalfrezi and need to buy turmeric, cumin, coriander and garam massala.

just been to big c and found turmeric and coriander. however when i read the name for turmeric in thai it was cumin or something very similar. bit confusing that one as they are not the same..

anyway.. does anyone know the thai for the afformentioned herbs/spices.

would be MUCH appreciated.

brilliant. cheers. cant wait to try this jalfrzi recipe.

For the record, the list on the website David linked goes like this:

1. WHITE PEPPER POWDER พริกไทยขาวป่น

2. BLACK PEPPER POWDER พริกไทยดำป่น

3. BLACK PEPPER SEED พริกไทยเม็ดดำ

4. WHITE PEPPER SEED พริกไทยเม็ดขาว

5. CHINESE FIVE-SPICE POWDER ผงพะโล้

6. CURRY POWDER ผงกะหรี่

7. TURMERIC POWDER ขมิ้นผง

8. CORIANDER SEED ลูกผักชี

9. CHILI POWDER พริกขี้หนูป่น

10. CUMIN ยี่หร่า

11. CLOVE กานพลู

12. SIAMESE GINGER ข่า

13. GINGER ขิง

14. ALLSPICE พริกหอม

15. FENNEL เทียนเปลือก

16. ANISEED GROUND เทียนตั๊กแตน

17. STAR ANISE โป๊ยกั๊ก

18. CINNAMON อบเชย

19. CARDAMOM ลูกกระวาน

20. GALINGALE กระชาย

21. FINGNELL ลูกซัด

Most of these look right, but someone else will have to comment. I'm barely conversant in cooking spices, so my one contention here is that in my experience "galingale" usually refers to ข่า (which they've translated as "Thai ginger" here), not กระชาย (which is commonly known as fingerroot). They're all in the ginger family of spices, though (Zingiberaceae). Can anybody help me out?
