PM plans to amend more than 300 obsolete laws

BANGKOK: -- The government plans to hold a joint parliamentary meeting to discuss amending more than 300 of the country’s obsolete laws, the Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said on Saturday.

Earlier this week the government exercised article 213 of the Constitution and held a joint meeting of the 700 members of the Senate and the House of Representatives to discuss poverty and the violent unrest in the South, Mr. Thaksin said during his weekly radio address.

The government benefited from the joint parliamentary session which ended on Thursday, Mr. Thaksin said.

The prime minister said he planned to overhaul Thailand’s laws. More than 300 laws, he said needed to be amended.

The premier said he was considering using article 213 of the Constitution again to schedule a joint meeting of senators and MPs to brainstorm on the issues, including setting up a joint committee.

Better ideas should emerge from the planned session. Academics and government officials would be asked to draft a framework before it was again discussed in parliament, he added.

Democrat leader supports amendment of obsolete laws

NONTHABURI: -- The leader of Thailand’s opposition Democrat Party, Abhisit Vejjajiva says he fully supports the government’s plans to amend 377 laws which are considered out of date and affect peoples’ rights.

Mr. Abhisit said during the debate on government policy last month, he had point out that administrative problems often delayed parliamentary business.

The opposition leader made his remarks after Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra had announced plans to hold a joint parliament meeting to discuss amending the obsolete laws.

Last week, the government exercised article 213 of the Constitution to hold a joint meeting of the 700 members of the Senate and the House of Representatives which discussed poverty and the violent unrest in the South.

Some of the obsolete laws needed only to be considered briefly by the MPs, said Mr. Abhisit. These include the laws on holding a referendum, national health and consumer protection.

Mr. Abhisit said he did not know the details of all the 377 laws that the prime minister said needed to be overhauled. But Thailand has too many laws and some certainly needed amending because they were already obsolete, he said.

Why not just do away with all the laws in Thailand? - there's barely a single Thai that seems to take any notice of the current laws, so what's the point in having them? Rules are made to be broken, as the saying goes, but don't they take it the extreme in the country? TiT again I suppose !!

Forgot to mention the latest law Toxin's bringing in - no drinking and surfing the Net! Who is this <deleted> trying to kid? He must be the laughing stock of the country if not the world, over this one.
