just needed some advice regarding the VAF1A application form, the area about my girlfriend's father's details. Her father was an orphan and did not have a family or surname himself as this was unknown. My girlfriend, when born took on the family name or surname of one of the family's in her village. Then her father died when she was only a small child.

I dont know what to put on the application form as it asks for her fathers first name, surname and date of birth. If anyone could advise me the best way to fill in these details it would be most appreciated as we dont want to mess the form up it will be our first time trying and would like success on the first attempt.

How about just writing "unknown?" Reckon that's not all that uncommon here in Thailand.

Just put what information you know - with our application the fun thing was dates of birth - nobody knew the actual dates of birth of my wifes father so we put in an estimated date!! Her mother was given the same date of birth as The Queen - this made her very happy (my mother in law not HM The Queen)!!

The embassy must be very used to this situation and unknown or unrecorded seems to be accepted without much question.

As has been suggested, put 'Not Known' or 'Unknown' on the form and then explain the circumstances in the Sponsor's Letter, which you will have to provide in any case.

If you look at the Guidance Notes, this is what is recommended.

I believe that there is also a section on the VAF1 for you to provide additional information so you could also use this.
