Gasohol sales double

BANGKOK: -- Gasohol sales have doubled since mid-February, with around 8 million litres of the alternative fuel now being sold to motorists each month, according to new figures released today by Thailand's petrol giant, PTT Public Company Limited (PTT).

The figures were announced as PTT signed a deal with Thai Agro Energy on the purchase of 750,000-1,000,000 litres each month of 99.5 percent ethanol for the production of gasohol 95.

The amount of ethanol purchased under the deal will increase in line with demand.

Gasohol, produced by combining one part of regular gasoline (91 octane benzene) with nine parts of ethanol, is being heavily touted by the government as an alternative to traditional fuel which will help reduce the country's reliance on expensive oil imports.

Since PTT cut the price of gasohol to Bt1.50 per litre below gasoline on 15 February, sales have doubled at the 330 gas stations selling it.

By the end of the year, PTT hopes to increase the number of gas stations offering gasohol to 400.

Doubled huh? A year ago it simply didn't exist and now it's double that. Another case of propaganda statistics. Note that they didn't disclose any actual sale numbers, or percentage of gasohol out of total sales.

I've just read that drivers noticed that a full tank of gasohol doesn't last as long as regular gasoline, and they blame it at least partly on fast evaporation.

The whole idea is suspicious. It's like adding a bottle of Mekong every tiem you fill the tank to save money. A litre of gasoline is cheaper than a litre of Coke, let along ethanol.
