20,000 job vacancies

A huge number of job vacancies in automotive and electronics productions are immediately needed to be filled, a seminar on unemployment was told yesterday.

There are around 20,000 positions in urgent needs in both sectors, said Labour Minister Phaitoon Kaewthong. These highskilled positions have been left vacant by series of huge layoffs since the global economic slump starting midyear, and few people who are qualified for these positions have chosen to seek alternative jobs, with financial assistance subsidised by the government, he explained.

Assurances for equally stable jobs and other incentives are needed to encourage them to reenter their careers, Phaitoon said. These positions, which offer an average salary range of Bt10,000 Bt11,000, are based in industrial estates in Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan and Chachoengsao.

Not surprised why there is lack of people applying. My cleaning lady who finished only P6 is earning Bt15-16k working 6 days a week.

And high skilled positions are being paid only Bt10-11k?

Spot on but hope you get your money worth with the cleaning at that price.

Please tell me that's not the monthly pay rate (10-11K bht). I make more than that a day..

Yes it is correct average rate in these industrial areas is about 230 BTH a day.

But on top of this will be small quality and attendance bonus with some companies paying a yearly bonus of around 2 to 6 months salary.

Now you can understand why bar work etc is not so bad an option.

These jobs will be taken up. There are many more coming on line. On top of the salary is the opportunity to work OT which can even double the monthly amount. While these numbers may seem laughable to expats and they may also bar work as such a good option this is not how it is viewed by all young Thai people. Making 10-20K a month is OK for many of them even if the work is long and many do not want to lose their dignity by selling their bodies.

The problem right now is that the jobs are available but the people are in the wrong place. When the economy went down at the end of last year many workers who came from upcountry areas moved back to the villages. When they hear the work is again available they will move back to factory areas. We were just telling some young family members that there was again a lot of work in Chonburi. We certainly wouldnt recommend they entered such a dangerous trade as bar work.

The factory work is mainstay of employment for young people and generally prefered by them over farm work as it gives different lifestyle options and a regular income. There are issues about safety, accomodation and pay in these positions although these can vary a lot by employer. However, working condition issues will improve as time progresses without ever becoming perfect.
