Security guards ? Fire suppression system ? Maizefarmer Posted November 17, 2009 Share Posted November 17, 2009 ... and read all small print with a fine toothcomb - I thought I had all "household" goods insured untill the dog knocked my Naim CD player off a shelf about 2months ago, and I have had a fight from hel_l with the insurance co. since - they are trying to classify/argue the CD player is "specialist" electronic equipment - the "argument" arising from the way hi-fi is defined in the Thai language "terms & conditions" small print, and how it has been translated and written in the accompanying english version of the "terms & conditions". Insurance small print is a never ending issue with folk when they come to claiming, at the best of times - it can be exponentialy worse when written originally in one language, and then translated into another language, so read it very carefully. This wouldn;t appear to be a one off - I have looked at about a dozen domestic insurance policies from different companies over the last couple months, to find that this and similar points in the policies from all these different insurance co's. are "poorly" translated from the Thai version into the English version of there "terms & conditions". Not related to my claim, but still an important point I found on several of the contracts was the way the word "cost value" was used, versus "replacement value" i.e. read the doc in Thai and you get the impression you would get paid out what the goods cost, but when you read the point in the english version of the terms & conditions you get the impression you get paid out what it would cost to replace the broken or damaged goods - which can be 2 very different values. ....and then there are other points,like those associated with utilities e.g. gas utility installations - very clearly and well explained in Thai, but no-where near as detailed in English when it comes to explaining things like ensuring the gas appliance has/had a service record, that the heater/boiler or whatever has/had been serviced, that the servicing agent was properly authorised service agent, not just any gas repair man ect ect ..... lots of little things like this that no one bothers with - untill they make a claim(!!).
