Doorman Tip With Newyear ?

Featured Replies

I live in a (modest) apartment. There are doormen/guards who stand near the entrance. Should I give them a tip on new years day or any other suitable day ? If so, what is a suitable tip ?

double post

last year i gave my security guys a case of leo between them and a bottle of sangsom each......... and they were over the moon

We provide a New Year 200 baht per person gratuity for the set of guards at the gate of our condo located in the CBD. I think we may be in the minority in doing this, but I noticed that I am always greeted with a friendly smile and a seeming eagerness to provide assistance in carrying things in and out.

Over the Chinese New Year's period, I gave out red packets, each containing a crisp new 100 baht note, to almost every staff who worked in the condo building I live in -- management office, guards, maids, engineers, etc. -- all happily received it, and for the rest of the year, you always get a big smile and greeting and eagerness to help when they see you.

I sometimes buy the security M150's on a hot days & last Thai New Year I gave them a bottle of Johnny Red. Later that afternoon the security had mysteriously vanished, only to be located a few hours later having a nap in the nearby garden. :)

Just bear in mind that the average security guard is paid around 150 Baht per day.

If you give too generously, they will be looking for more and that will be on every "special" day.

Do you let them carry your Stradivarius ?

And probably asleep on duty. lol

I was going to do it this year but we just had a burglary in the building and they changed the security guards and most of the condo technicians/staff. So all new people. Still give???

give what you can afford, be it 200 baht or 1k depends on how much you feel they deserve, and how pleasant/helpful they have been to you over the year

I had shopping delivered the other day from villa market, I asked how much it was he said nothing so I gave him 40baht is this crap?(its only about 5 mins away)

also when I first moved into my condo the security guard helped me with my shopping, I went to give him a tip but he refused and looked a little hurt so I didnt offer again.Although im not sure now, and think they may expect tips and that they were just being nice as I just moved in what do you think?

I did buy them 2 nice bottles of whiskey a few months ago tho.

I wouldn't give anything. It's not a custom and most people won't certainly do it.

Sorry a double post due to some strange error.
