Have some friends coming to Thailand on the 4th of Dec. and was wondering what the alcohol laws are for that long weekend.

The King's birthday is on the 5th December. In past years, the bars have sometimes been open, sometimes closed. So it's 50-50 if they will be open this year. No closures on the other days though.

My guess would be 'closed'; so a significantly worse chance than 50-50. I agree it was 50-50 in the past, but if anything Thailand is on a certain path of becoming less free, or at least less 'lessez faire' if you will.

Also, you don't mention a region. In Bangkok it's most likely to be very strict. Upcountry it will be less rabidly enforced.

On elections I had to drink the beer from large "tea cups".
