PHUKET: Nepalese with opium detained

PHUKET: -- A Nepalese man was arrested yesterday at the provincial airport here, allegedly in possession of more than four kilograms of refined opium worth Bt1 million, police said.

Danh Barder Tamang, 51, was detained when his suitcase was X-rayed in the airport’s departure lounge. The man was about to board a domestic flight to Bangkok, police said.

The drug, weighing 4.3kg and concealed in the suitcase, was detected by an official manning the X-ray machine.

During police questioning the suspect allegedly said a man - identified only as Oam - had hired him to carry the suitcase to Bangkok and give it to another man.

Tamang told police that he had been staying in a Phuket hotel for four days.

The suspect was charged with possessing an illegal drug with intent to sell. He is being held at Chat Chai police station in Thalang district.
