It's not yet been released in Thailand by the official WD distributors, so if you find one it's parallel imported.

Tukom in Pattaya is selling them.

Tukcom is selling the first edition also called wdtv-notice that it is without live

Correct, I have one, and superb it is. Personally I do not need the 'live' part so will not be changing.

Can I assume the "Live" part is without a network connection (and therefor without the Flickr, Youtube stuff?

The new edition-live- has a network port and can connect to youtube and I guess bittorrent. The first edition doesn't has this function. There might be some other differences but the network connection is the major improvement.

The older model is the WD HD TV box and that indeed has no networking options.

I myself have a A.C.Ryan Playon!HD box with the 300mbit WLAN USB adapter, works brilliantly together with our NAS server (it can also be used as NAS itself, but we had a NAS server already when we bought it).

Find it online at invadeIT and Digilifegadget

The one my step father just bought has a lan cable port, as to what it does..... i have no idea.

Sounds like he got a WD TV live then, however as I said they are not officially released in Thailand yet by Western Digital but that often don't keep everyone from selling them :)

So can you point us to which shop in tukcom sells them and at what price?

I'll ask him where in Tukom he got it from.

Not having the network port was the major drawback of the older one. Not so much for downloading torrents etc, but simply the fact that the device could only play media from a drive connected directly to the player.

In our modern days, many people have one PC (or NAS storage) holding all their media, and they expect to be able to play the stuff in their living room without the need of moving the whole storage media to said living room.

Kind of negates the need for the media player!

My Bad, seems he bought an older one, when he went home for a fortnight a few days later he took it with him and bought the newer one whilst there (the one that i saw).

Is there a place where I can get this in Chiang Mai is well? I've seen places at Fortune IT Mall selling them but not in Chiang Mai yet.

anyone got any idea when the wd hdtv live version will be available in Thailand and approx how much?

I bought mine in October from IT City (top floor of TukCom) for about 5,000 baht. I'm very happy with it -- it will play almost any file I throw at it. I bought a WD Passport USB drive at the same time and use it to port files from the computer to the TV on a daily basis.

Did you buy HD TV or HD TV LIVE for 5000 baht in IT City?

The WD HDTV always has been just under 5000 Baht, the big IT store on the top floor had them in stock a while ago.

Not the live though, as Richsilver says, you need to get your media on an external drive and then plug into the HDTV, as you cannot connect it to a PC, or network storage. The Live should have this option!

They sell HDTV (NOT live) a bit discounted now, just saw one for around 4,500 at Banana IT in Tukcom. This is without any disk space and you need that (a proprietary WD disk too) to use it. I don't know what it cost but I guess another 3,000 or so. Since I already have 2 TB disk space online on my LAN I really don't need that dinky toy, but would be interested in a HDTV Live or similar.

Monty we talked about another one that was very popular but alas only available in Bangkok, what was the name of that again? As I recall it could both have a built in disk drive (any brand), USB and network. How do they compare?

I think it was the egreat mediabox (or something like that).

One of the better ones around, it does not have space to build a drive in, but does have a sata port so you can hook up a drive directly if you want.

It also does have a network port, and any shared drive on the network shows up nicely, including folder structure.

About 6,500 Baht, only available in Bangkok though, haven't seen one yet in Pattaya...

Sounds pretty cool. Does it have some sort of a browser. I guess I mean, can it play streaming stuff, i.e. youtube etc?

You really should look at the A.C.Ryan http://www.playonhd.com/en/

It does all the egreat does, just better (in my opinion), and then it's 1000 baht cheaper. It also has an internal slot for SATA drive.

The egreat is sold online as well, just google something like 'buy egreat media tank thailand'

Doesn't look like it can play streaming media. It does play shoutcast radio streams and seems to have a bittorent client built in...

Specs here:

And a review here:

Not sure if there are firmware updates and what is possible today. They do keep making new firmwares for better format support etc...

According to this review the ac ryan isn't that good.

I found some similar reviews but they are not in english so no need to post them.Seems that it has some problems with HD content.

The egreat can indeed stream media from the internet.

That isn't the Playon!HD ....

The DVR is a very different product and is by no means to be confused with the HD media player.

Edit for working link

just finished reading reviews on both and i think i will wait till the wd hdtv live comes to the LOS. Perservered with movieplayer on Dreambox for this long can wait a bit longer to actually watch my downloads in hd.

i think the internet feature is worth waiting for, as it seems similiar to the way dreambox works.

I use the Iomega Screenplay Pro. It has HDMI, Network Port and 1TB on board. It can also record from my set topbox.

Very happy with it, although, the remote control is a bit fussy at times.

Got it shipped here from the US [www.newegg.com]
