Go on to the airlines web page, ie Emirates for one, and they show a full timetable for their flights and the price at the dates you require. It's easy to work out when the best time to fly is, value wise.

Even better idea to use a flight comparison website. Everyone has their own favourite - Opodo.com has served me well for 5 years plus.

The fares vary enormously between carriers and depending on seasonal demand. As a guide I give some experience of the London to Bangkok prices (all economy return) below. Even in low season an indirect flight varies between say £400 (typically Jet or Gulf) and £650 (often Emirates are now in this upper band - because their better planes/service are now in demand). A direct flight can vary even more - between £500 (Thai or EVA if you hit the right date) and £1,000 (British Airways).

The fares above can be as much as 40 to 70% more if you are flying in high season.

Fares are much cheaper the earlier you book. In my experience they do not come cheaper if you leave it until the last few days - often quite the contrary, even if it low season and the planes are half empty. I guess the airlines know there are a lot of old travel hacks with flexible plans on this route, who would game play if the airlines let lots of very cheap seats out at the last gasp.

Unfortunately if you are flying Bangkok to London you will have to pay up to 50% more than the equivalent journey Lon to BKK. I know I know - it's a rip off and TV'ers constantly complain about it, but we all presume it is supply and demand - i.e. there is a much bigger population of people wanting to fly starting in Europe than there is starting in Thailand plus the fact/rumour (I do not have any personal evidence) that Thais get cheap flights on Thai Airways to Europe, so that just leaves stranded falang as an easy target for the airlines.

fares are high when they are released, some 12 months beforehand. At some stage they fall or cheap, restricted fares are given, and can be low to the last day - depending on the season and demand.

as you already know you dates you have to start hunting, but before the new year don't expect yet the cheapest fares, as airlines try to push artificially hight seaonal tickets - they will fall in january
