Colabamumbai Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 How many foreigners are living in Thailand with expired visas?
alyx Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 I doubt the one fitting the description would want to answer that or you directly for that matter (PM maybe?) As for the immigration I also doubt they would answer you but they could keep you posted with the numbers of illegal aliens they arrest every day (not necessarily deported as their jails seem full of people in custody for months , some for years) Mind you there is a category who might want to fill you in: the one who knows someone against whom they hold a grudge. *Ah yes there is a name for that: tip-off No offence meant
rfukata Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 How many foreigners are living in Thailand with expired visas? - like any other countries, there are always foreigners living with their expired documents/visas. as alyx has stated, the question is too broad and have to narrow down your specific inquiry. -who do you consider foreigners? tourists and travelers? I know for a fact that their are tons of (border immigrants) from neighboring countries around Thailand who are living on expired status.
lopburi3 Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Actually many people and living legally in Thailand with expired visas - on extensions of stay.
alyx Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Yes, but, in this case, the validity of the visa is not questioned, is it? Mind you, the title of the topic and the question differ in content And , mca, give us a link to your source please
Tod Daniels Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 I doubt even Immigrations knows the real number of people who are on overstay, although I’m sure they know the number of people a month they incarcerate for visa violations. Because Thailand does not have an 'incentive program' (a reward system) in place to compensate people who point out over-stayers, it’s all too easy for people to just stay below the radar and live. Also because many of the chronic over-stayers are living here virtually hand to mouth there is little incentive for the Police or Immigrations to pursue them as there's no financial benefit in doing so. In interacting with foreigners who live around the nefarious nite-life areas, it is my experience the number of foreigners who are here on overstay is actually quite high. Now if they only offered a small reward to point out the people who over stay their visas I'd be rich...
alyx Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Well, it seems that I have to add another category then: the "soon-to-be rich stitch" to my initial post (or maybe the "Bling-Bling Grass") As a matter of fact a thread like "Would you point someone out (for €/$/£ ...or not)" might attract more response but nothing to do with the topic started by the OP, but jokes set apart, I do think that it is kind of cultural thing. Some nationalities do find it quite natural to tip off the authorities whereas it is highly immoral to other (depending on the nature of the offence, of course)
PhilHarries Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 By foreigners does the OP mean farang foreigners or does he include Cambodians, Burmese, Laotians etc etc? Either way it's one of those unanswerable questions. I suppose you could set up an anonymous poll here on TV and apply the percentage of illegals here to the estimated number of foreigners in Thailand. However, of course, the figure would be 0.00% as everybody on ThaiVisa is squeaky clean and totally street legal.

Who cares how many are here, More interested in how many they can catch and throw out. What are you talking about ?? Why should they "catch and throw out" foreigners who are living in Thailand with expired visas? A stupid comment ! Most foreigners that I know living in Thailand have expired visa, often for many years, but are legally leaving there because of work, wife, retirement, ... It's a pity to see that even on Thai Visa some people do not yet know that a visa is only an authorization to enter the country, not an authorization to stay in...
Bpraim1 Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 I am here on a NON O visa that I have to renew yearly to stay and live with my family, been doing it for close to 5 years now. Why do I have to follow the rules and jump through the hoops, While others just do as they please. I was refering to those whom come to Thailand and never bother to follow the beautiful clearly worded rules on long stays in Thailand. You know the likes of whom I'm talking about!!
Pattaya46 Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Bpraim1 said: I am here on a NON O visa that I have to renew yearly to stay and l... Wrong. You renew each year your extension of stay, not your visa. I bet your visa expired 4 years ago
Bpraim1 Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Ok ok ok you win, I am on an extension of stay, But you know what I'm getting at!!! And no only last year as I left to home for a bit and didn't want to make a reentry permit.
Bpraim1 Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 I think the Op was asking more along the line of How many Foriegners are livin in Thailand Illegaly. But hey I have been wrong before, Guess it is open to how we each see it till he clearly states what he was asking.
Ijustwannateach Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?
PEP Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 I am here on a NON O visa that I have to renew yearly to stay and l... Wrong. You renew each year your extension of stay, not your visa. I bet your visa expired 4 years ago Ehem! Pattaya46, May be the case for some, but I have lived here continuously for nine years on a one year, "Non-immigrant O" Multiple entry Visa that I have to renew every 12 months (15 months). I am not married nor do I have the funds for a "Retirement Visa" thus do not qualify for "Extension of stay". PEP.
