I was sitting in traffic the othere day when a young girl stepped out in front of my car in to the path of a motorbike. The motorbike swerved but the rider still give the girl quite a heavy blow with his shoulder. The girl was shocked but without missing a step she just continued across the road and didn't even gance at the passing bike. The guy on the bike also never even glanced back and just continued on his way

Since this incident i have become ever more aware of many people who just seem to be almost drones, without any real level of consciousness - soulless, spiritless if you like. Very strange

I can see where you're coming from, BUT.....I think you misinterpret it.

I think both parties in your story just accepted it and instinctively knew there was no point getting animated or emotional as what happened, happened. No use crying over spilt milk.

The girl knew she was at fault for her own injury, so can't blame the rider. The rider knew he wasn't to blame so no apology needed, and he only had to swerve so it was not a big deal to him.

It's nothing about consciousness or spirit. I wouldn't assume there is no passion in Thailand.

Thats the mai pen rai attitude thats all. since being here over a year now myself im sort of developin the same thing, for instance other day my motorbike taxi driver with me on the back crashed into anuva bike only slow but still nearly came off an all 3 of us didnt even acknowledge it! if that happened back in uk there well of been a scrap!

I think Harcourt has summed it up pretty well. Forbearance (tolerance and restraint in the face of provocation; patience) is highly valued in Thai culture. (Not too sure about forethought though.)

I agree in part - Thai people do have a mai pen ry attitude, but that doesn't (for me anyhow) account for othere such incidents of observing people who seem to be of low consciousnees. I don't neceseraly mean Thais. I mean how many times have you (for eg.) seen ferangs walking around a shopping mall in speedos

My conclusion (or opinion) is based on observation - as you correctly state

Some people just appear to be were strangely one dimensional and hollow inside - just an observation.
