Land Crossing 15 Day Rule

Featured Replies

Can anyone clarify the 15day land crossing rule for me? Is is that you

- cannot do it more than 3 times consecutively?

- or not more than 3 times per year?

What if I do a land crossing 2x, then go to Malaysia for 2 weeks, then fly back in get 30 days, after that, can I do the land crossing 3 times again? Or only once?

Confused,

Thanks

No limit on consecutive land crossings. A bit of a pain doing it every 2 weeks though.

Really? I didn't know that. I thought you could do it max 3 times in 6 months. How about 30 days when flying in? Is there a limit?

No limit on either.

There used to be a rule about a year ago but it was scrapped.

mmm I am also confused. Does this mean the max 90 days in 180 days is scrapped?

There is no enforcement of that old rule anymore. There is no limitation. After four times they could ask what you are doing but even that is not often done.

The 90 days per 180 rule was scrapped the same time they reduced the visa free stay (on land borders) from 30 days to 15.

My understanding was four land border crossings is the limit since reducing the visa waiver to fifteen days.

No reports of that.

Only reports are of people being asked what their means of income is, e.g. show bank book etc.

Purely to make sure they are not working illegally in Thailand

I did not know that rule had been scrapped

Nevertheless, out of interest, does this apply to the arrivals at the airports as well? but for 30 days on arrival? or is it restricted to land's crossings

Thanks

The rule change happened Dec-08. No questions on 30 day arrival by air, but many land border crossings may lead immigration to question you as to what you are doing.

The latest rule, valid as of 1st June 2009: Travellers without visa will get only 15 days of stay if they are arriving via a land border checkpoint from a neighbouring country. Thai Immigration Officers have received instructions to record all of the foreigners personal data if this person has entered Thailand four (4) consecutive times on 15 days tourist exemption stamps. This data will be forwarded to the Headquarter for further investigation.

No limit/restriction on arrival at landborder(15days) or via International Airport(30days).

Some officers mark Passport with a number to follow up the consecutive entries. However if you enter via Airport the count will be reset .

That is great news to some of us (t about the 30 days on arrival at the airport)

Has anyone been able to understand why such a change in the policy happened in June after all the restrictions had been tightened in the past?

I certainly don't understand it. There was a big discussion on here when the 15 day rule came in. I think it was to deter Farangs working Illegally or something; here. Can't really be a lot of farangs working Illegally here surely, OK. Lots of Farangs assisting there other halfs with certain ventures but I can't see what the fuss was about. Other Foreigners still get 30 days at land crossings, no questions asked and who are just as likely, if not more to be working here Illegally. No ..... Don't understand it. Don't want to speculate either but it does seem discrimatory.

We won't be seeing many real life reports of land border entry restrictions because not too many people would be doing them every 2 weeks.

My Filipino gf has done 3 consecutive runs to Ban Pakkad in the last 6 weeks after a land entry at Friendship. That's 4 x 15 days land border entries in 6 weeks. They only marked the 2nd entry at Ban Pakkad with a 1 (November 4). The next 2 and the 1st one at Friendship were not marked. They've either stopped bothering to count them or they're only doing it sporadically.
