Long Distance Travel Around New Years?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I'm currently in Thailand and on the 6th of Jan I fly back to Australia from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. I'm planning on meeting some friends in a few days in Bangkok and then taking a flight from Bangkok back to KL so that I can get my flight home.

We're not sure where we're going from Bangkok but it could be as far away as Chang Mai. I understand that the trains will probably all be fully booked by then but basically I was wondering what my chances were of booking a bus say from Chang Mai to Bangkok one day before? Are these likely to be fully booked as well? If so I might just stick around Bangkok for a few weeks.

If that was a bit hard to understand what I'm basically wondering is if the long distance buses to Bangkok are likely to be booked out so that I wont be able to get back to Bangkok in the days right after new year? If so are there any alternatives?

Thanks

My experience last year was that all trains and busses were indeed fully booked.Only very overpriced air fares were available.Good luck!

Wow, really? That kinda sucks! Was that just government buses or the overpriced tourist buses as well (if I have to catch them I guess I will - beats missing my flight!).

If it was indeed both of them I might just have to hang around in Bangkok for a while!

DAH: Reality check. New Years is one of the busies times of the year in Thailand. Trains, Plains and Automobiles (buses) are fully booked.

Hehe, I probably should've researched it a bit better before I came over! Oh well, I've had fun being spontaneous so far.

New plan is to get a plane from Phuket to Chang Mai in the next few days and then get another plane from Chang Mai to KL after NY. Gonna set me back about 7000 but it probably isnt that bad after you factor in the cost of trains and stress. :)

I managed to get fair priced flights around thailand at christmas time last year no problems.

I have searched for flights, accommodation several places for xmas/new year. I can confirm that that its very busy, and fully booked many places. Luckily i got a one-way flight to my destination, and I'm wait-listed for the return.
