Mae Sai Crossing - How Much?

Featured Replies

How much is it to cross the border at Mae Sai, I know its 500bt, but I can't remember the dollar amount?

As I recall it works out cheaper to pay in dollars than baht. Thanks

It was 10 bucks last week.

Ten bucks every week. Make sure it's a nice new shiny one or they won't accept it.

At todays exchange rate it should be 14 USD. Boy are they losing money.

One day it was 500 baht only. Not entertaining dollars that day at all.

One well prepared fellow had to walk all the way back to the Thai side to use an ATM. Apparently had no other money on him, despite the fact that you're 'supposed' to have at least 10k baht to show (if asked, rare) on the Thai side. Caused a ruckus when he tried to blow back through the wrong line and made the Thais start thinking about 'required funds' again. Good job!

Yeah, I know, most of the time he would have been fine. I'm sure that was his rationale as well.

Do yourself and everyone behind you a favor and a) bring enough cash to handle this contingency, and b ) don't throw a spaz, as I've seen many do, if the Burmese don't want your 10 dollars. The junior lawyer lectures and tantrums won't lead to anything except a hardening of attitudes.
