Toyota To Invest THB15B To Build New Plant In Thailand

BANGKOK: -- Toyota Motor Corp. ™ Wednesday said it plans to invest THB15 billion (around Y41 billion) to build a new plant in Thailand that will produce pickup trucks, to meet rising demand.

The new plant, which will be located in the outskirts of Bangkok, will begin producing Hilux pickup trucks in early 2007 and will have an annual production capacity of 100,000 units, the Japanese company said in a statement.

The plant will employ around 2,000 new employees, the company said.

Toyota will also invest THB3 billion to increase the capacity of its existing gateway plant in Thailand to 200,000 units a year by 2006, the company said.

The plant currently produces 110,000 units annually. The expansion will require around 1,500 new employees.

The plant currently produces passenger cars models like the Camry, Corolla, Soluna, Vioz and Wish sedans.

After the expansion, Toyota's local unit, Toyota Motor Thailand Ltd., will have a total production capacity of around 550,000 units a year by 2007.

They already have two plants - Chachoengsao for cars and Samut Prakan for pickups where they currently build Vigos, Fortuners, Innovas and, I think, new minivans as well. It's not clear form the article what is going to happen to this Samut Prakan plant, it's not even mentioned like it doesn't exist. Are they talking about moving it, expanding it, or building a second pickup/IMV plant?

From what I heard the IMV production will move to the new plant becaues of the limited capacity at the Samrong which used to be Hino truck assembly plant. BTW Innovas are imported from either Indonesia or Philippines under AFTA. A new minivan to be assembled in Thailand? If true, what model?
