Ram - How Can I Tell What I Can Upgrade To And How It Will Interact With What I Already Have ?

Featured Replies

Not sure but I'm thinking about a RAM upgrade. I have 2 x 2GB and 2 spare slots. Here is what I have:

This is the PC http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/documen...965〈=en

This is the memory: Samsung 2GB 2Rx8 PC2 6400U 666-12-E3 (2 of these and 2 slots free)

240 pin, DDR2 SDRAM

I'm guessing that 666 is some speed ???

What is 6400U ???

The link above says I can use 8GB RAM

Do I have to match the 666 or the 6400 ? I'm presuming I have to match the DDR2

Then, is it worth it ? to go to 8GB ?

If you have that exact model which you linked, then it would seem that it came with Windows Vista 64-bit so it makes sense to upgrade the memory.

The motherboard is a dual channel model, so you need to add memory in pairs. Meaning if you want to upgrade you should add 2x2 GB more.

The memory you are looking for is DDR2 PC6400 800MHz 2GB DIMM, can be either CL5 or CL6 that doesn't matter.

So for example if you were to go for Kingston you would want this model: Kingston 2GB 800MHz DDR2 Non-ECC CL6 DIMM

I just put 8GB of fast ram in my computer and is certainly faster, not sure how much this is due to the ram speed or the extra ram though.

Yeah, it is that model and id come with Vista 64 Home Premium.

I am considering moving to Windows 7. Not 100% sure I will yet but what would this mean for memory, if anything ?

Also, if going to Win7, which one ?

You must have 64 bit to use 8GB of ram, Ultimate allows you to change the menus etc to other languages including Thai, other versions will let you change only the input language, I use the media centre included with Ultimate a lot. You should go to the MS web site to see if Ultimate is for you.

Windows 7 is an improvement over Vista, it is faster.
