Enlarged Prostrate Long Term Treatment Benefits

I have an enlarged prostrate and currently using Proscar and Doxazosin and hoping to prolong surgery. Would like to get some feedback about the long term use and benefits of medicine versus the benefits of surgery. Is it possible to avoid surgery with long term use of medicine treatment and has anyone have experience? Heard of men having surgery and later on having to have it done again. In my case my prostrate is large and have been told it may take 2 times in surgery.

I can't answer your question, but only tell you what my doctor told me to expect. I am on the doxazosin (2 mg/day), as well, and it is taking care of the situation for the time being. He said I should expect to eventually have to have surgery...suggested a time-line of 4 or more years away. Told me to keep up with the PSA tests, which so far have been perfect.

These medications do not alter the progression of the disease so, if a person lives long enough, matters will eventually get the point where surgery is unavoidable. How long that will take is very individual. In some cases, especially with much older individuals, they may be able to avoid surgery altogther simply because they die of something else first.

In cases of benign (non-cancerous) enlargment of the prostate the need for surgery is determined by the extent to which the person is symptomatic.

Try saw Palmetto with a dose of 360 Mlg, a day also the concentrate and not the herb. Buy the product that has saw palmentto, pygeum, stinging nettles, pumpkin seed, and zinc. each of these herbs or minerals preform a specific function. Check out lef.org for complete info. I am 65 and been taking this product for years and no signs of enlargement.

There have been studies of saw palmentto and the studies have had mixed results. Most often the product being studied only contained saw palmentto and not the full range of ingredients I have listed.

Good luck.

Had a problem in this area a long time back. A Dr that was very open suggested I knock one out a few times a day. This release prostate fluid in small increments and reduced the swelling.

I know this seems crude but it is the only way to directly reduce the size - empy it!

hi steveb :

have done the regular pharma products for "prostate shrinking" and found the side effects unacceptable.

the worst: loss of libido ! just too scary ! -- so tried many "herbal supps" and found one that's doing the job.

google: "Prostate Magic" manuf.: Golden Dog inc. Carson City, Nevada and talk to Plato Rosinke.

( if this info is not allowed - mod. pls delete ) then you can PM me.

I am using 2 caps AM bef. bfst and 2 caps PM bef. sleepng. also learn about prostate massage/milking from

Martin Stonehaven ( from U.K. ) - this combination has helped me alot. Check also your "blood sugar" and

if its high and you have to urinate more than 2 times nightly - better take care of this also.

PM me for capsules I am taking for lowering blood sugar & dietary regiments. Good luck.

ps: whatever you decide : NO SURGERY , you'll be incontinent (using diapers) for the rest of your life !

plus : for sure IMPOTENT ! :)

The first thing is spelling it properly!! It's "prostate" I am so tired of seeing people spelling it "prostrate" which is what is commonly done before persons of eminence... Ok, carry on..... :)

^ What must be considered though is why the prostate is enlarged? There are only really 2 causes and neither are good news.. If it is not cancer then it is most likely prostatitis which is a deep rooted infection as the prostate is like a sponge in texture with many small ducts that get clogged over time and an infection ensues so milking after the fact is dangerous as it can cause the infection to migrate into the blood stream and make you septic.

If you do 'milk' an enlarged prostate after the fact, as milking is supposed to be preventive in nature as it were, not to treat an already enlarged prostate, then you should do it only after a couple of days of antibiotics and continue until you run out of them and then desist for a period and continue with the same sort of preemptive medication in a few weeks before another milking but this can have a beneficial effect on shrinking and overall relief..

Also not every surgery turns out with incontinence or impotence the truth is the sooner you get it the better as smaller size allows for less tissue removal and therefore less nerve damage..

Not quite true I had my prostate removed I am continent (not used any protection after one week) and yes while I am impotent at 65 it is not that big a problem and I do not suffer from any sexual problems

In addition to prostatitis (infection) and cancer of the prostate there is a very common condition called benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), which appears to be what the OP of this thread is talking about. BPH is very, very common in older men, in fact virtually an inevitable part of the aging process. It is a rare man who lives to a ripe old age who does not have some degree of it.

Unlike cancer of the prostate, there is no possibility of metastasis and BPH need not be treated unless the symptoms are bothersome enough to require it. Medications -- both prescription drugs and the herb saw palmetto -- help alleviate symptoms but the prostate continues to slowly increase in size such that, if the man lives long enough, the time will come when symptomatic relief can only be obtained through surgery.

Surgery does not always cause incontinence or impotence and surgical techniques have improved greatly in recent years. However, there is still a risk of these complications. Prior threads on prostate surgery have included percentages that suffer from these problems post-operatively. The likelihood of such complications varies with the individual patient and also the surgical technique used. Anyone contemplating such surgery should seek a surgeon skilled in minimally invasive/nerve-sparing techniques and should specifically ask the surgeon what the percent risk is in their particular case. No surgeon will be able to guarantee you won't suffer incontinence or impotence but they should be able to tell you what the odds of it are.
