It's been a while, but if you walk due east of the train station a few minutes there are several travel agents along Thanon Niphatuthits' 1, 2 and 3 (north/south) that have regular pick-ups. Schedules and prices are up on big boards. There used to be share taxis that went from outside King's Hotel, which is also in this vicinity.

Walking from the Orient Hotel on Thanon Niphatut 3, just head around the corner to Niphatut 2 and there are buses to the border and people to ask if you're unsure. Beyond the border I don;t know personally, but maybe if you ask someone along the way? \

MOST public transports need to cross the border before it closes on either side of the immigration....

i do not recall that you can leave late in the afternoon.... unless you want to charter....

early in the afternoon probably will be your best bet.... to get to penang before roosters go home to roost.... LOL

unless there are several person in your party.... you can charter to leave just before border closes...
