Hobbies are allowed here, and are not considered 'working' in most cases, according to the Labour folks in Phuket. If you doubt me, go and look for their response to the query in Phuket Gazette.... They even listed two phone numbers to call with a question about that, specifically.

Also, no reason to get annoyed when people here are trying to help in their own limited way to a Thai legal question  :o

Great news!!!! Can you help me find this article. If not I'll go look on the web and thrash around a bit.

ALIEN : A natural person who is not of Thai nationality / citizenship.

WORK : The engagement in work by exerting energy or using knowledge for purpose of obtaining wages or other benefits.

Couldn't find anything about hobbies at the Phuket MOL or PG.

Very strange!!! You have accurately reproduced the definitions from the web page you reference....but I went looking further and found this:

Section 5. In this Act,

"alien" means a natural person who is not of Thai nationality;

"work" means to engage in work by exerting energy or using knowledge whether or not in consideration of wages or other benefit;...........

This was taken from: http://www.phuketwork.org/english/law.html which is another page from the same site you referenced. Notice that under the definition of "work" is says WHETHER OR NOT in consideration of wages or other benefits while your page eliminates this 'whether or not'!!!!!

Here is that answer, according to one person 'quoting' law

http://www.phuketgazette.net/issuesanswers...ails.asp?id=309

Here are a couple of others..

One is about bar owners and Investors... Even walking into your bar to check up on things requires a WP...

This one deals directly with trading commodoties online. No way, Jose, they say, and I'm in complete support and agreement, of course :o

Let's face the facts. There are laws here that cover every issue that could possibly come up. Fortunately the laws are very selectively enforced. I believe they are that way for a purpose. That purpose is to be able to eliminate problems that they consider nuisances. This is the reason to keep a low profile. If you rock the boat you WILL lose. There is absolutely nothing you can do about it.

Yes, it's even clearly stated that 'thinking' is working in Thailand, too :o

well it seems that according to the Phuket Provincial Employment Services Office, getting out of bed in the morning and brushing your teath (or as someone more elloquently put it, "banging my Thai girlfirend") is considered work and therefor illegal without a WP so I gueess I have my answer on the orginal quastion.

of course there's the whole enforcement issue, but I guess the bottom line is, if someone high up with enough local clout decides they don't want farangs moving into the moo, you're up khee creak!

Thanks for the links. I hope your smile is not forced because of my comment about the accuracy of your post. If so then you misunderstand my intent. My comment was confirming that the discrepancy between what you posted and what I found WAS NOT due to an error on your part but rather because of a serious error of omission by someone in the gov't.....

I think you were quoting udon, not me?

Anyway, it's pretty cut and dried...

Labor official to farang: Are you thinking?

farang: Yes, sir!

Labor official: Working!!

farang: kissass.gif
