Comprehensive Medical Check-up In Chiang Mai

Recommended Posts

I live in Chiang Mai and want to get a comprehensive medical exam (check-up) done. I have heard of several reputable hospitals in BKK that offer this service with xrays, blood work, etc. I know it can be a bit expensive but it's nothing compared to what it would cost in the States!

Does anyone know of a hospital that offers this here in Chiang Mai? I'm hoping to find a hospital and service that is geared to expats/tourists and is comparable to BKK, but if it doesn't really exist in Chiang Mai then I would consider going to BKK, so any BKK recommendations would also be appreciated! Thanks!

If you want an economical and low-tech, but nevertheless effective medical, try Dr Tawatchais surgery on Loi Kroh Rd. The eqquipment is on a old side and the 'treadmill'for getting the heart rate up consists of running up and downstairs 10 times, but you get all the results you would from the Ram. It costs somewhere under 3,000 baht. Don't know how much the Ram costs

Dr. Nisachon Morgan M.D. at Health Care Medical Clinic on the Hang Dong Road. Far more comprehensive than anywhere else in town for the same price or even a little less. Perfect fluent English. The best!

Do a search on this forum and you will find not one negative comment about her.

Sripat did several MRI brain scans on me, the last one this month, interpreted by my neurology professor.

And....??? Results....??? Cost ....?? Good ....??? Bad??? Recommendable ??? By the way hope all is well with you and welcome back !!!! :) and shame on TV for not having any mushy and emotional emoticons like hugs and kisses ..

Ok, now I wait to hear from all the bright eyes and hear the " Are you blind or what " /////

Yeah the "threadmill" is a bit unreliable. I ran up about a dozen times up/down the stairs and my pulse only registered 45 per minute. :)

I've gone to him for my annual for the last 3 years. My last full annual in January cost a whopping 2790 baht.

Would concur with others Dr. Morgan would be my choice for the full medical and any other medical conditions you might have.

I am one of the hardest persons I know to please and it's a rare event when I give out a strong recommendation, but in Dr. Morgan's case she merits the highest praise I can bestow. By far, the most conscientious, compassionate and knowledgeable GP I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Anyone looking for the best medical care in Chiang Mai need look no further.

Dr Morgan's full annual physical for 6100 baht that Thai Pauly linked seems to be almost identical to what Sriphat does for 4200 baht. Am I missing something?

Dr.Morgan at HMHC charges just 6,100 B for the works, I paid over 10,000 at Ram last year.

She will be doing one for me next month.

I can see from the pdf that its 275 hang dong road, I'm sure I can find it. However if you can kindly let me know roughly where it is in relation to some landmarks ( tesco or similar ) I'd be grateful.

Regards CM2

Perhaps I too am missing something too. My annual physical for the 2790 baht, includes full blood work, urine and stool test, xray, ekg, and physical prostrate exam.

What else is Dr. Morgan doing for well over double the cost of my annual?

I can describe it - when coming from the north. I drive south on the Hang Dong Road from Airport Plaza past the big Tesco/Lotus and take the right lane in order to make the first legal (careful) U-turn. Then I return in the direction of Lotus, but keep an eye to the left for two green cross flags, set out in front of the clinic.

From the south, as I know where Tesco is, I start looking of course ahead of time - another poster estimated it at 300 meters.

You hit the nail on the head when you said "annual".

OK, maybe I pay a bit more, once a year, but back in the UK we used to have a "family practioner" who actually knows something of your history on a personal level, a family doctor if you like, but these are now being replaced with Health Centres and maybe 10 overworked doctors are dealing with you so they don't really know you personally.

What I like about Dr.Morgan's practice is that she KNOWS me, KNOW's what I look like and CARES about my health. As I get older more things go wong with me and it's somewhat comforting to know that as a regular patient I will be looked after.

It's like "The Good Ole' Days back in the UK when the NHS was first formed.

It's just the same as going to a GP back home but better, if a hospital visit is required then she will recommend the best specialist doctor in town to help me.

Just to give you an example: I had to go to Bumrungrad Hospital to have a "Nerve Block"procedure done which so far has not proved successful. Now if I call the Doctor in BK who performed said procedure to find out why it is not working I might not really understand the reasons and implications of my op, Dr Morgan will contact them on my behalf and be able to find out exactly whats going on and pass the info onto me and ask THE RIGHT questions.

Also the cost of medication is vastly cheaper than hospitals in CM. I have to take 4 tablets a day to keep my ulcerative colitis in check, I pay HALF of what Ram charges.

So maybe I pay a little more, once a year, but I gladly do that to support my Doctor. She really goes the extra mile, if I visit the clinic about a specific problem I will normally get an e-mail or a phone call asking how I am progressing....how many other Doctors in CM do this?

When I had the reults of my "Annual" at Ram last year, the results were given to me in 5 minutes by a Doctor I had never seen before...

I suppose it all depends on what price you put on quality and personal healthcare?

So maybe I pay a little more, once a year, but I gladly do that to support my Doctor.

In the past, some members have highly recommended Sripat Hospital over RAM. The main issue was that it is supposedly cheaper and that RAM is reputed to pad the bill.

Recently I took their advice and went to Sripat for a sleep test and some blood work. I found myself waiting around for hours for the simplest things and when I checked against RAM's prices, I found that Sripat was cheaper, but by very little and I have never had to wait more than a reasonable time at RAM.

We had finished with the sleep test after several visits when the doctor recommended another test that was not necessary, but she felt that I should have because of my weight. I explained that I rather go to my normal doctor because he less expensive and I don't have to wait around all day and he has his own lab (Dr Tawatchai on Loi Kroh Rd). She told me that he does not offer this test (which turned out to be true) and that it would only be 1,000 baht - was that OK?

To make a long story short, I showed up for my appointment and found out that the doctors appointment was at 9AM (and they have never been even close to being on time) and the test was scheduled for several hours later and then I would have to wait around to talk to the doctor about the results - another day sitting around for hours.

I decided to just go ahead as I was already there and they told me that I needed to pay in advance. I went to the cashier to pay "1,000 baht" and she asked for 2,200. The doctor had stuck a bunch of other blood tests on the bill that I had already done at my usual doctor and I had said that wanted to go there for anything other than the one test.

My point is that RAM is not alone in padding the bill and it is a heck of a lot faster than Sripat and only slightly more expensive. On top of that, most of the same doctors work in both places.

I am not trying to convince people who like Sripat to switch hospitals - go where you are the most comfortable. It is a good hospital - but to many of us RAM saves a lot of time and is worth a little more money. If you want to recommend Sripat, that is fine, but you don’t need to put RAM down in order to do so. I am very glad that we have them in town.

I can't compare RAM with Sripat very well. The emergency surgery at RAM was great, if you were willing to accept limited range of arm movement forever. The follow-up with the infection was worthless there, at Hua Hin, and at Savitejet in Bankok. So I went to Sripat and got referred to a specialty clinic at Maharaj. There I waited for hours with all kinds of Thais, and saw a genius of a Thai who did several years of residency in Michigan, for free. He operated, cured me of the infection which was killing me, and got me twice the range on movement I got from RAM. So I have not bothered returning to Ram. I've gone to Sripat for everything, and they have my computerized records back to March of 2003, when I was a tourist.

My experiences are unlike some others who go to Sripat. I wait maybe 15 to 30 minutes, for opthalmologic surgeons, cardiologists, plastic surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, wound ajarns, etc. I'm retired; I can wait 20 minutes. My children in Texas wait an hour or more and pay hundreds of dollars. My pharmacy order take five minutes and is the cheapest in town. I'm happy at Sripat,

"Only slightly more expensive !!". I guess I have this quote correctly attributed UG, but I'm can't seem to square it with the published prices.

The 2790 baht I paid wasn't for some random unknown doctor at a local hospital but Dr Tawatchais of the Loi Kroh Clinic who is well known and by most, highly recommended. Although, over the last 3 1/2 years, I have only see him 5 times including my annuals as I am fortunate to be in excellent health "so far", he does remember who I am as does his nurses. Granted, I would be impressed if I got an email letting me know the tests are ready for review but he doesn't have a start up practice he is building and doesn't charge more than double for what appears to be similar medical offering.

Most important, regardless which doctor we use, may we all continue to have the best of health and limit our visits to the annual checkup, no matter what the cost is. :)

Why not check out the 'One Day Medical Check Up Program' at Chiangmai Klaimor Hospital; I picked up the latest while visiting my granddaughter who was born there. Costs range from B750 (15-25 Yrs old) to B5320 for those 45 and over. The brochure lists the 5 programs with their associated tests being check-marked: includes a free dental exam. Check out the rooms while there and costs; the rooms are nice and their prices reasonable. Worth a visit.

It's my understanding that while most hospitals have their attached full-time doctors, many doctors rotate on a day-per-week system amongst them all. A doctor, say a skin specialist at Ram will also visit Sripat. I've had treatment at Ram Sripat and Klaimor, and they all have served me well under my Blue Cross insurance. :)

BTW Klaimor is on the same side as Lotus, ans just before it as you head S from the Airport Pklaza intersection towards HDong on the Chiangmai-Hang Dong Road.

Cheers

Both my wife and I have been going to Dr. Morgan's office for our primary medical care soon after she opened for business.. Like ThaiPauly said she takes the time and interest to get to the bottom of the problem and I don't think this is just because she has a new practice and is not currently swamped with new patients to see each day.

Regarding her fees, if anything, they are too low for the time she spends with you. Currently, I believe her office visit fee is still just 150 baht - the same or less you pay to go to another well known clinic where you will be lucky if you get 5 or 10 minutes with the Dr. before you are sent on your way.

In any case, I think it is critical everyone have a reliable medical "gate keeper" they can trust and rely on and for us that person is Dr. Nisachon Morgan. Check her out for yourself and I think you will be pleased with the recommendation.

I am talking about for the tests that I have done and the examples that Eek presented. I have no idea if this physical is pretty much the same in both places, or not. However, if it is the same as other clinics, the price for a check up seems way out of line.

This subject or similar seems to find its way onto this forum every month or so and opinions dont seem to change. For those of us who have decided to go with Dr Morgan do so,I believe , because we feel comfortable with her expertise , manner and service provided. Speaking for myself ,as a relative newcomer to CM, I used the following criteria when making my choice. One that as a relativly young Doctor I hope, and expect, she will be around for quite some time. The benefits of that are obvious. Secondly when you have an appointment, the time is kept and the clock is not ticking throughout the consultation. Lastly her follow up by phone or email to evaluate progress is something that I have not experienced before and is much appreciated. However at the end of the day it is just a personal choice for all of us and if you are happy with your current provider stay with them. My wife and I also see 2 specialists at RAM Hospital and for us continuity, provided we feel we are getting the right advice and/or treatment is important.
