Thai Birth Registration Post 21 And Marriage?

Featured Replies

So here is my case. I am female born in the USA and currently have US citizenship. My parents however are both Thai nationals who immigrated here 20+ years ago and have since gotten their USA citizenship. My parents currently have dual citizenship.

When I was born however my parents failed to register my birth with the Thai Embassy in the US. I've been reading the forums and it seems that it should be a piece of cake to go into the embassy now with my parent's IDs and my birth certificate and register my birth at the Embassy.

HOWEVER, I got married about 2 years ago to an American US Citizen (non-Thai). And have since then legally changed my surname to my husband's.

Do I still qualify for Thai citizenship? Can I still go register my birth and obtain a Thai passport and citizenship?

TIA for your help!

Thew fact that one of your parents is Thai at the moment of your birth is enough to make you a Thai national also. So yes, you have Thai nationality.

What you need to do is register your birth at the Thai embassy, for which you will need the help of your parents. Once that is done you will be registered as a Thai national with the government. You can probably apply for a Thai passport at the same time you apply for a Thai birth certificate.

Contact the embassy or a general consulate for more details and the forms.

It shouldn't be a problem so long as you show the paper trail from your maiden name to your married name.

I myself didn't have a birth certificate issued till I was about 17 from an overseas embassy and has been perfectly usable ever since. If you are looking to travel to Thailand, you should apply for a Thai passport at the same time from the embassy, as it will be much easier for you to do so there (for the first one at least)

Thanks for your help! I was worried that my being married to a non-Thai will ruin my chances of becoming a Thai national
