Legal Info - If A British Woman Marries A Thai Man?

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I wondered if anyone in this group has any information (or can point me in the right direction) about the legalities of a British woman marrying a Thai man?

I have been with my Thai partner for 3 years, and whilst marriage isn't on our minds yet, we are very happy with our life here together.

Someone mentioned to me the other day that the right for farang woman marrying a Thai man are different to the other, more common way around (farang man, Thai woman).

Does anyone know anything about this?

I'm more intrigued than anything else at this stage, but it's sensible to know what the deal would be I guess (visas, owning land, what would my rights be if the marriage separated, children etc?!)

Thank you, I appreciate any ideas, as google didn't come up with much!

Don't know about "rights" --getting married is the same process, yes. Getting visas is easier as the rule is that the man is the legal head of the family and as a thai man he does not have to prove income. However, he is applying for his wife to stay in his country, not you applying to stay.

owning land, nope.

getting citizenship, theoretically easier and some people have done it but its still a long process.

divorce and kids, sorry no experience there

If she were to eventually obtain citizenship could she own land then?

Yes - as would a farang lad. :)

That's good to know, but I imagine it would be quite the process to get citizenship.

If I recall reading its a mountain of paperwork, thai language abilities, and 3yr perm residency?

cases are nearly as rare as hens teeth.

More information about acquiring Thaicitizenship can be found here: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Story-Thai-C...io-t121353.html

If you become a Thaicitizen you are a full Thai citizen, with the same rights and obligations as any other Thai. Including the right to own land and no need for a work permit.

I think what you may be referring to Rosella is the visa situation when you get married. For farang men marrying Thai women, there are a million hoops that have to be jumped through mainly concerning the amount of money he has. When the situation is reversed there are, as I understand, remarkably few. As a wife is naturally supported by her husband ( :) ), they are not concerned about the wealth of the woman, and a non-o visa is dished out as soon the marriage licenses are shown.

This as far as I know is the main difference. In terms of family law, just from reading stuff on here, the terms seem fairly similar to back home. Mothers are preferred guardians in the case of a split, but if the mother is shown to be incapable, then men will be granted. Visitation and custody etc can all be decided through courts, though in my experience here most separated families work it out themselves..generally quite amicably. The children aren't used so much as pawns, especially in poorer families, it comes down to where the child would be financially better off and more stable.
