In Chiang Mai there are so many shops that they only get a percentage of the price for each massage that they do - no salary - and most do no more than one massage per day even though they have to sit around the shop every day waiting for a customer. No wonder the poor things have to resort to doing "extras". :)

Most traditional massage girls get paid per customer. How much they get paid varies, however, with the exception of the very inexpensive massage shops, most get paid about 100 baht for a 2 hour massage. If they get a lot of customers, they do well but of course, no customers mean no money. Since they get paid every 2 weeks at many places, most girls depend on tips to survive day to day for food and normal expenses. The money they get on "paydays" tend to go for rent, utilities and money to be sent back home, depending on the girl.

Some shops do pay their girls a salary, however, those tend to be the more exclusive shops. If they get a salary, their commissions are measured against the salary and they are paid anything in excess of the salary.

At one shop that I go to in Phuket the girls earn 100 Baht per customer and that's it, some days they have as many as seven or eight customers, other days they only have one - the shop charges 300 baht for a foot massage and the shop gets 200 Baht, I imagine the same ratio applies on all other massages although the girls keep their tips.

What I've been told by those masseurs I have known well enough to ask is that they get about 4000B base salary (this is in Bangkok) and a small portion of the fee for the massage itself, plus any tips. For one person working in a decent, non-dodgy establishment near downtown, his average take-home was 8-10K in a usual month (but when are there usual months anymore???)

A very common deal i BKK is that they get half of the price paid for massage. No base salary. No customers = no salary, simple as that.

One shop I know of in Khon Kaen gives the staff 200 baht a day " standby " money and 50/50 on any massages so on a 300 baht 2 hour massage they'll get 150 baht.

Looks like it's a mixed bag as far as salary. I ask as when I return in April I want to ensure my wifes sister (who is a masseur) can take the month off from work to spend time with us. Although this may sound goofy to some it was my choice to do this. I just wanted to have some idea what she may be required to pay her employer to help ensure her job is there when she returns. I don't however plan on over paying but of course it wouldn't be the first time.... :)
