Cancelling A Work Permit

Recommended Posts

I recently quit my job after being messed around. The school then sacked my girlfriend (who had been working with them for seven years) for no reason whatsoever. :o

Now, I know that you have seven days to leave the country after the school cancels your work permit....

but my question is, if I know for a fact that they won't be cancelling it

Could I play it out until December, or am I asking for trouble??

I know that it won't be cancelled, because my girlfriend was the one that was in charge of my work permit and she's told me that they haven't got a clue, it's a very small family run school and I was their first ever foreign teacher.

Thanks in advance

The girlfriend "was" incharge is the operative phrase here. The replacement may well know the rules and have your work permit canceled at any time. If you plan to live here long term I would try to get it right from the start rather than risk a problem later. There is a push for computer reporting and once that happens a lot of the slack is likely to disappear.

Yeah you're probably right, having been here almost 6 years it would be pretty stupid of me to mess things up now. However, I think i'll just give myself a couple weeks leeway...

One more question...

My UK passport has only got 3 blank pages left but expires in 2007. How exactly does the renewing process work. Should I apply for my new passport before doing the visa run, or after??

Your work permit gave you a visa, if you lose your WP you lose your visa and you need to leave the country within 7 days. however if you do nothing, nobody will know that the visa in your passport is no longer valid and you can travel in and out if you have a multiple re entry or if you request one every time you leave.

nobody will question anything and when you apply for a new work permit, you will be charged with overstay at 200 baht per day, with a maximum of 20000 baht

there might be a slight risk and if you get caught you probably would pay the fine for not canceling your visa (1200b) and pay your overstay

is it worth it? depends on what you want, i did it for 7 months, travelled in and out. At the time, i did not know this and the people who had my work permit had promised not to cancel it but they did and did not tell me. When i applied for the new one the officer at immigration did the calcultation and i paid. nobody seemed to be worried about it, only me...

2oobaht per day is expensive if you only use it to give you some slack, 2000 bath to poipet gives you another 3o days and you are legal again... your choice

You could also go to jail and be deported; and that would not make for a very good day. :o
