Not strange at all, most people flying to Thailand on a one way ticket would require a visa. A re-entry permit is a pseudo visa and would be checked as any other visa. You are right to a certain extent that not all airline staff are familiar with them, a supervisor will soon sort that out. -

It is absolutely irrelevant; the fact is not, that Thaksin is so strong but it clearly proves - over decades now - that Thailand is far, far away from a functioning democracy. If Thaksin can control the country with an invisible remote control while being in "exile" it proves not only his composed, resilient and focussed strength but also the inability of any opposition to being a real opposition. The only thing they can do is bickering around, accusing each other over corruption or disloyalty to the flag.
