Bomb Blast On Chang Khlan Road And In Phayao

Featured Replies

Just saw on the Thai news about a bomb blast on Chang Klan around 2:00 this morning. Looked like a good amount of damage. Any one have any further info?

Also there was a bomb blast in Phayao today. This is really getting dangerous.

According to Thai Rath:

The bomb went off in the parking lot of Central Chiang Mai Memorial hospital. 2 cars sustained damage.

The case was reported to the police at 2 AM. Where the bomb went off there was a 1 inch deep and 7 inches wide recess in the ground. Shards of a light blue S-pipe (?) were found scattered around the site.

2 meters from the explosion site was one silver Honda City that had sustained splitter damage to the left side of its chassis, and 10 meters from the site was a Nissan pickup belonging to the hospital with a shattered rear window.

The initial investigation carried out jointly by the military and the police revealed that the bomb was a home-made contraption made out of an S-pipe stuffed with scrap metal and either flash powder or nitrocellulose.

Interrogation of witnesses near the scene revealed that the actual blast had taken place 01.58, but nobody had seen any culprits because the parking lot was completely dark and next to a small soi.

In their initial statement, the police say that the culprits do not seem to have aimed to kill any physical persons but rather cause damage to the parked cars. They find it unlikely to be connected to current political events since the site is inside the premises of a hospital with no connection to any political party. Hence it is believed that it may be a case of private retaliation, due to the information that just one day prior to the event, a hospital employee was fired due to breach of regulations. The police will bring the former employee in for questioning to ascertain whether he may have been involved or not.

As for bomb events related to the political situation, there has been 7 so far, so this would be the 8th bomb, despite the police roadblocks round the city.
