Hi,

I applied for a ten year visa for my mates wife in the next village by post. (he is 73 yrs old). His wife got a visa OK but they only gave her two yrs.

I applied for a five yr visa for my own wife again by post and got it without a hitch. Try for a two year visa first and see what happens. If you get that I'm sure you will get a five or ten yr on your next application.

Ditto.

Applied for a 10 year multi-entry for my mother-in-law (who's in her 60s). She's been to the UK before, and has a 10 year for the US, but embassy only gave 2 years.

When I asked why she couldn't get the 10, they said they don't issue 10 year visas in Bangkok.

Personally I think it's just a typical rip-off Britain thing. 10 year multi-entry is cheaper than two 5-years, and LOTS cheaper than five 2-year visas. Therefore, by making you have to come back, they take in more money. (it's not like she'll ever have to do an interview as any future visas will be virtually automatic, so the admin costs should be cheaper than the amount charged for the visa).

Thai Passports are 5 yr max expiry if my memory serves right.

Could they use that excuse?

Not really - as Thailand is happy to extend passports for an extra five years. (even children's passports can get extended easily, which means 9 and 10 year olds travelling on passports where the picture is of an infant, and you can't even tell if it's a boy or a girl).
