I am about to come to Thailand, and apply for a visa for my girlfriend and baby. I think I understand how to do this for my girlfriend, but I am confused about the baby.

Nat and I have been together as a couple for about four years. She came to stay with me in London early in 2009 on a tourist visa, and obeyed the terms. Since then we have had a baby together, Lily. Lily is registered with the Embassy as British. We also built a house next to the Mekong.

We will marry, probably next year, and part of the reason for them to come is so we can plan this in detail (Thai or British ceremony, how many guests, does her sister come to UK, exactly how big the diamond should be, etc). We don't want a marriage visa this time, but next time in 2011.

Does a two-month-old baby need a visa? or is she covered under her Mum's?

The baby will have a Thai passport (like her Mum), so do I need to do a entirely separate visa application for her?

We are going to apply for the British passport for Lily, is it best just to wait for this passport? Presumably not needing a visa?

Another thought: is the baby visa the same size as an adult visa, or really tiny?

Sorry if this post is already dealt with elsewhere... grateful for any pointers.

the easiest and cheapest way by far would be to get a uk passport for your child.

if you already have a british birth certificate it is just a case of filling out one form and paying the fee (about 80 - 100 pounds) you can have it couriered to any address worldwide.

You are best to get the child both Uk and Thai passports. Because she is a baby it is quite a simple process and because she is a girl you have no downside to dual nationality (possible national service if a boy) The process for the UK passport is straight forward but for the Thai one you will have to travel to the embassy in London make sure you take photos and cash to pay the fees (cant remember exactly how much but i saw a few people having to go find ATMs)

As with all our dealings with the thai embassy it is frustrating we tried to get all the information off their web site but as usual not everything was on there so what should be a quick painless operation was not. We also had big problems in that they wanted us to return to London (we live in Dorset) to pick up the passport and in the end after much wailing and gnashing of teeth i managed to pursuade them to post it in the recorded delivery envelope i bought but this was not routine practice.

good luck
