I have been to the british embassy and got the affirmation to marry, i then went and got the translation done. All this was very quick and easy. The next step is to go to get the stamp of approval on the sworn translation, i need to go to the same building as the immigration.

My question is, do i have to be present or can my gf take the affirmation and get the stamp done? Is there any time limit from when you get the translation done for you to take it to the consular?

Fianlly does anyone know the cost of the marriage. Not the wedding, just to go to a ampher and register a marriage?

thank you

Allow me to be COMPLETELY GENERAL.

Never DO anything without your thai-wife or propspective present. Don't ever even bother going to any of these places without her.

Where I live whether the Amphur or Immigration will send you away if you don't have the thai wife present. For any kind of business.

I speak thai, and the immigration speaks english, but in general the Amphur only speaks thai. Doesn't matter, NOBODY wants to speak to a farang.

I think the essential problem in the system, is too often the FARANG is really marrying a Lao, Burmese, Cambodian, .. the little lady ain't what she appears. Thus the officals wherever you go will ALWAYS want to see HER and HER ID card. Without exception. When a farang is claiming to have a thai wife, the officals NEED to know that everything is on the UP&UP, and they'll only know this if she is present. Lastly, this is one other reason for having a NORMAL thai girl. If you lady has questionable paper you need to have her ALWAYS present so she can cover your <deleted>. Everybody wants to see this 'wife' cuz quite often this little lady that Joe-Farang met in Pattaya could have bought her ID card viturally anywhere.

Be on the UP&UP. Always dress well. On this subject, whenever you go to ANY OFFICIAL government place, ALWAYS keep your mouth SHUT. A good buddhist does this thing. Let the lady speak on your behalf and she'll ONLY answer questions. NEVER GIVE INFORMATION OR EXPLANATIONS. You create a fishing expedition to hel_l and piss off the government official who can make your life hel_l.

In THAILAND a farang shows respect by taking off his shoes, by sitting down and staying down, and keeping his mouth SHUT

Lastly, for god sakes learn a little thai so you can understand what the officals are asking, and you know the real story.

The essence of your question is "DO I BRING MY PROSPECTIVE THAI WIFE",

The answer is from now on for the rest of your thai-life, whatever official government business you do, or even opening a bank-account. Take your thai wife, and make sure she brings her ID card.

All the above is only intended to SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE.

On average most of us only spend 5 minutes a month in these offices, that's not a long time to keep your mouth shut, and dress up and be nice.

It is not the same building as immigration, it is well before that.

Regestering a wedding is free, but you should also ask for the wedding certificate and a copy of the register, (Kor ror 2 and 3). Immigration now asks for the copy of the wedding register. That might cost somewhere between 10 and 50 baht.

You can get married at any amphur.

To legalize a translation, go to the Ministry of Foreogn Affairs. Here's a description of how to find the place:

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Bangkok-t352...60#entry3464760 You can go there yourself, but you dont need to. I suggest you use one of the agencies in Bangkok that offer this as a service for a small free. Otherwise you will have to spend an hour to get there, wait three hours (if the place is not busy...) and then spend an hour to go back.

Marrying can be done at any Amphur, you'll find directions to one Amphur in the same thread. Marrying is very cheap and takes about one hour. One important thing; in case you dont speak Thai you need to bring a third party interpretor who will interpret all documents verbally (read them to you in an language you understand) in order for you to confirm with your signature. The GF is NOT allowed to interpret. Bring a Thai friend. The process takes about one hour.

I beg your pardon.

When you go to Immigration, you may very well go alone. If people follow your advice, what do people do that are single, or do not have steady girl friends. Foreigners in Thailand have the same rights as Thai people with the exception of owning land.

Thanks for the links, i think bilbobaht has missed my question somewhat, as i was mearly asking if as i am at work all week, if my gf can take my affirmation and translation to get legalised. As there are agencies that do this for you, i realised that this is in fact ok.

Nice rant never the less. Otherwise thank you for the responses.

My sister-in-law took my 'freedom to marry' declaration to the MoFA for verification - so, no you don't need to attend yourself.

It was a while ago, but I seem to recall that we needed a witness to the registration of our marriage at the amphur office. The witness had to be a Thai citizen.

Good luck.

The office staff did it for me.
