Accurate Weather Data

No argument that this season has been a scorcher and we are having a major lack of rain. So my question is besides your backyard thermometer and personal rain gauge who do you use for your official information for the weather. Who can give Year To Date (YTD) figures for rain. The daily Hi's and Lows of temp by the day, the week, the month and the year.

TV weather also is mostly wrong. Today no rain - it rains. Last week Thursday or Friday forecast was rain - well no rain. Think all a hit and miss game. http://weather.thaivisa.com/chiang-mai/

yup ive been watching the Thai Visa weather for the last week as well.

early last week, it forecasted rain for friday

then by midweek, there was no rain till sunday,

then by friday, no rain forecasted during the weekend till the following wednesday

then today we get rain, but nothing but fine weather forecasted today

better get some new dices to roll

I don't think it's possible to predict rain of this type, the late hot season / early dry season thunderstorms that affect a tiny area. It's anyone's guess where they're going to hit.

Also, keep in mind that it also wouldn't be proper to put the big 'thunderstorms' graphic on a day that will be sunny all day, with a 30 minute downpoor at the end of the day. That sort of thing scares tourists away, too.

This weather report from wunderground is what I use when curious as to what the weather prediction might be. I also like the fact that they give a a downfall using percentages rather than simply saying "rain today".

As a flyer, I am always on the lookout for the best animated current satellite sites. Weather.com has a fairly decent one for SE Asia which I use the most often.

Intellicast has one of all of Asia but it quickly jumps in such large time-chunks over a huge area that it is not really good for local weather observation.

Climate phenomenon will extend the rainy season, leading to increased flooding and possible landslides, meteorologist says

La Nina will hit Thailand this year causing landslides and flooding nationwide, a climate change expert said last week.

The projection is based on two scientific signs: the Multivariate Enso Index (MEI) and sea temperature projections in the Pacific Ocean.

"The signs are so obvious that La Nina is forming and should start hitting Thailand and Asia in the next two months, the beginning of the rainy season," said Dr Anond Snidwongs, a scientist who works for the Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research.

"There will be no major storm-induced rains, but the seasonal rains will continue a lot longer, which will be the main cause of landslides and flooding," he said.

There was a strong La Niña episode during 1988-1989.

La Niña also formed in 1995, and in 1999-2000.

A minor La Niña occurred 2000-2001.

The last La Niña was a moderate one, which developed in mid 2007. NOAA confirmed that a moderate La Niña developed in their November El Niño/Southern Oscillation Diagnostic Discussion, and that it would likely continue into 2008. According to NOAA, "Expected La Niña impacts during November – January include a continuation of above-average precipitation over Indonesia and below-average precipitation over the central equatorial Pacific.

However, El Niño conditions returned in June/July 2009, and may strengthen and last into 2010
