Rubbish forms basis of new electricity plans

BANGKOK: -- The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is to set up a subsidiary company which will generate electricity from household waste, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam announced yesterday.

Mr. Wissanu said that the subsidiary company, the establishment of which was approved in principle during this week's cabinet meeting, would provide electricity for Siriraj Hospital, new Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport and private sector companies.

It is likely that the project will be jointly funded by the EGAT, the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) and the country's petroleum giant, PTT Public Company Limited (PTT).

The plan will be put before the National Energy Commission next week before being put before the cabinet for an official approval.

More pollution from the burning of all that household waste and rubbish. :o

The newer technologies for trash burning power plants are significantly better (less pollution, more efficient) than most plants used in the past. The Japanese in particular have put quite a lot of effort into improving this process and have developed a very high temperature incineration process.

The question remains as to if Thailand will proceed with this, and if they do proceed will they spend the money to do it correctly?
