I guess they are now all wakening after thier nice nap they had while the city was just beseiged, rampaged, and burnt to the ground! Now I know why they did absolutely nothing at that time... they were napping getting ready to take on this huge problem that some guy may lose 20 baht to some other guy! Ah, the picture becomes clear:)

My thai Girlfriend told me how the police were trying to stop them playing cards at night. They now play cards a couple hundred meters into the jungle. Stopping thai's gambling will never happen.

You've got to love the figures $1.1B of bets- cash seized $30,000 lol TiT

The thing is that 'legitimate' bookies such as the ones in the UK, for example, are strictly regulated by the financial authorities and are made to be ethical in their practices to a degree. They even have to suspend accounts if they feel that customers are being irresponsible with their money.

So, instead of punters being able to play in a 'relatively' safe and responsible environment, they instead go underground to illegal dens ran by mafia types whom would happily take everything that they have.

Logic, ain't it just great.

many football fans will break laws banning gambling.

One [more] thing I really do not inderstand here in TH: WHAT IS WRONG about the gambling in this country?? What is their point to completely ban that??

Civilize it, build some casinos and goddamn OPEN for the public - why everyone willing to gambe should travel to Cambodia and invest (well, spend...) their money UP THERE? What is the logic?

Could somebody gimme a clue pls? No jokes, just please explain the point...

The trouble is that there's no money in stopping a riot.

With gambling, they can arrest or take a pay-off or both (or just make money by being bookies!)

and seriously, will that mob ever be cleaned up?

Its no laughing matter, gambling along with drinking, drugs and prostituition are a sure way to ruin and perpertrators should burn in hel_l!!!

Haha - you mean all 4 at once right ? Burn baby burn...

But seriously, you are being IRONIC i hope ?

By the way, the major existential problem is that for so many people He_ll happens WAY before death.

As for the Thai BIB being on 'High Alert' - shouldn't that just read on a 'High' ?

(an acquaintance of mine ordered some weed in a local bar a while back, and an hour later it was delivered

to his front door by...an employee of guess what govt. organisation ? )

Good Question ! - my take on it for what it's worth: Hypocrisy. i.e., "We're all good Buddhists". (national delusional self-image)

in Hua Hin many Thais play in the underground lottery, which is (just like the football betting) organized by police officers and has been in existence for at least 6 years (the time I live here). IF they want to crack down on illegal betting, all they need to do is look in their own back yard... 1 billion dollars... that actually blows my mind... but it explains why they don't want anyone else to organize the betting.

However, just like many other illegal things in Thailand the real solution is: legalize, tax, regulate.

if the police were made to account more then there might not be the problem but in my village the police control the gambling slot machines ect dont think you can beat the system thats ingrained you have to start from the top :D:D when we were robbed years ago called the police to our shop after 500 bth each to the two police plus whiskey we got a crime report Number now do the same as thai people DONT CALL THE POLICE :)

I know a Thai that lost 1 million Baht in one night. Basically, she played with money that wasn't her's and after loosing some she tried to win the lost money back because she didn't want to lose face.

The Thai mentality is a dangerous one when it comes to gambling, they just can't lose and walk away from it.

Nearest Cambodia is also Buddhist, but...LOTS of casino's right at Poipet and the whole way through KB...so far they feel nothing wrong about extracting Thai cash from Thai gamblers. I just wonder - why Thais unable to do so within their own country?

My question still open. :)

Even more reason to legalise & regulate it then. In a regulated market you can only gamble what you have.

I would think the Thai Police will actually crack down on illegal gambling. But this is just to protect their own revenue stream. Kinda the same way they go after drug trafficers. Just protecting their revenue stream.

Than rip them off LOCALLY - and the whole money still be within Thailand and could be used rounds and rounds. While they think about the gambling and dare to bring their savings in to - they are deserved to be ripped off. Welcome to the real world, Neo ©

But why force'em to go to Cambodia/Burma where they will lost the face AND the the money forever - for someone\somewhere else's profit? People who love gamling - they'll find gambling, whenever it is banned or not. Same way we go on alcohol, smoking or horse riding...Than better if they get that at the nearest Soi than at the nearest country, huh?

This is what I call "law of no logic". :)

That is why you should never ever-ever-ever play for (serious) money against a Thai. I've seen Thai blokes play pool and lose against foreigners, for money. Situations like that end in tears (and graver things).

It's not actually the Thai Police who make these laws, it is the Thai Government. The Police are regular people trying to squeeze a dollar out of what they can.

The law makers are the ones we should be laughing at.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!

Many Thais get around the ban by heading to neighbouring Cambodia and Myanmar where casinos dot the border.

Should read...

Many Thais get around the ban by paying the police to have gambling schools....

555555555555555555!!!

Should read...

Many police get around the ban by becoming shareholders in and running gambling schools....

Good to see they have their priorities straight. Things like this and inspecting tourists' pockets are much more important than stopping idiots from going around with guns and grenade launchers.

Good time to be a member of the RTPF, what with these new opportunities and all the $$ they got for looking the other way for over 2 months.

It`s irrelevant whether you agree with this clamp down or not.

The law is the law and if you don’t agree with the laws and legal policies of Thailand, then there is always the option of seeking pastures anew, where you consider gives more freedom to participate in gambling and other pursuits. Or take a vacation to places that permit gambling while the World cup in on.

If people living here don’t want to become victims of the legal system or owned by corrupt police, than keep your head down and abide the laws.

No point in wringing about it later.

Thai's will gamble. Nothing can stop them.

If you says to a child: DON'T OPEN THAT DOOR!

what you think will happen?

Don't be ridiculous.

This same type of thing happens in the UK and the US. If anything, getting drunk, getting into mob fights, gambling, and police bribery are just as common in the UK. Just pick up a copy of the many British newspapers.

Jesus H Christ! What a complete waste of police time, money and effort. They really don't have a clue.

During Euro 2008, more than 1,000 people were arrested in Thailand for gambling on football matches, with nearly one million baht (30,000 dollars) in cash seized.

And how much police time and money was expended on arresting 1,000 people and seizing - gee whiz - one million baht?

You couldn't make this stuff up.

"Developing country"? Ha! It's going backwards.

1) Gambling is legal in the UK

2) No way is police bribery as common, that's just a daft comment

3) Getting drunk: So what.

4) You believe the British newspapers?

:) if you don't like it, leave

you must admit, he's got a fair point though

abide by the laws of wherever you are i.e. don't have sex on a beach whilst having a beer in Saudi Arabia

However, we can still debate the negative effects of Thai government policy.

Prohibition normally opens the way for gangsters to take risks to achieve a huge profit (classically 1920-33). The only people making dough over the current gambling policy are Cambodian, Laotian, Burmese, Malaysian, Chinese, ex-Thai politicians(!) and the BIB. That's just about everybody except Thailand, its balance sheet, tax-payers and (yes, even) gamblers.

:D

things haven't changed on this score. I remember the coppers raiding card schools when I lived in Sukhumvit Soi 22 almost 30 years ago. Gop Dum Gop Daeng was the big game in those days. 80 YO Grandmums being hauled off down the station. it was a joke in those days too. The Anti Gambling Laws here have been well entrenched for many years and haven't altered. For good reason.

Going back a few years when Soccer really took off here in the kingdom, with the introduction of Cable TV, there was a very well publicised case of a famous Thai Movie Star who topped himself over (football) gambling debts.

Actually I owe alot my success to gambling.

I was out of work and broke in Australia's big recession in the early 90's. The State government, where I lived, was broke. They promised for 100 years that they would never allow Poker (Slot) Machines or Casinos in my state. But they did. And it all went downhill from there.

Shortly after our local Thai restaurant went broke because the thai girl and her thai boyfriend gambled it away on the Poker Machines. We then picked it up cheap. I knew many Thais who lost everything when they legalised Slot Machines and Casino's in Melbourne.

In Taksins day he was avidly talking about legalising casinos in the Kingdom. Using the argument about 'cross the border gambling' - The same arguments as my government used about cross border gambling where I came from. It is a poor argument and is not worth the cost to society.

Casino's whether 'clean' or not, are haven for money laundering. A money laundering racket has just been uncovered in the one in my home state in Australia. And should you ever visit it you will find the large percentage of punters are Asian. Lots of drug money too.

The Thai Laws about gambling are no more out of date than those of the drug war. Both are pretty much lost causes, but as yet even in the West we haven't given up on the drug war.

Gambling has had a disastrous effect on society where I come from. It is bloody evil. You can bet on ANYTHING in Australia, legally.

The Government has a responsiblity to protect it citizens, especially the vulnerable ones.

I can only just imagine if the thais were given open slather to legal gambling. Just more misery for more people.

If they ban Betfair in Thailand I know alot of people will be in deep shit.

Betfair,Laddies and most of the Asian books online accept the big Thai punters.

The books on the street are more for the lower end 1000 baht punter.

Betfair don't allow financial transactions from a Thai ISP.
