Malaysian arrested for smuggling $180,000 in 'ice'

BANGKOK (TNA) -- A Malaysian man on Thursday was arrested while waiting in the transit lounge at Thailand's Suvarnabhumi international airport for smuggling 2.5 kg of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as "ice", with an estimated street value of more than Bt6 million (US$180,000).

Gunalan Sinnasamy was apprehended after Thai drug police were informed of traces of ice smuggling from Ethiopia on Ethiopian Airlines, Flight 606.

Five bags of the drugs were hidden in a specially-made compartment in the suspect's baggage.

The man confessed he had been hired for Bt60,000 by an Ethiopian agent to smuggle ice to a drug network in Malaysia, where the drug was to be sold at a double price.

Police charged him with having 'ice' in his possession for sale and smuggling illicit drugs into the kingdom. (TNA)

never heard of anyone being caught ' in transit ' before, normally they are nabbed before or after.... something tells me he was set up.

At 7 Baht/kg from my local 7-11, that must be a lot of ice.

Don't bring drugs to Thailand

nice one, but don't bring it all to the airport, it will flush all the floors...

If he was in transit, was he actually in the country? If he had not gone thru Thai immigration, theoretically he was not in the country.

Huh? He was in the airport and, since the airport is located in Thailand, he was in Thailand.

If you arrive at an airport in Canada and you get cold feet and you tell immigration that you have drugs before you go thru immigration, they do not charge you with importing, minimum 7 years. Yes you will be arrested but the sentence will be less than an importing charge.

Why not just notify the Malaysia authorities, let them execute him. They take drugs entering their country very seriously. Thai authorities don't get their hands dirty.

Yeah, right. There were probably ten bags of the stuff at the time of the bust.

Their hands are already "dirty".

All drug dealers should be executed

Pharmacists are drug dealers.

Don't bring drugs to Thailand

That's right there's plenty here already!
