Hi,

Does anybody have the most up to date infromation on meditation visa requirements for Burma? I have been planning to go to Pa Auk Forest Monastery in mid-July and have received a letter of visa sponsorship from the monastery to allow me to stay for an indefinite amount of time. But when I called the embassy yesterday, they told me that it takes up to one month to process this kind of visa. One month! I can't wait that long because I only have a certain window of time open for this retreat (90 days.)

So I'm looking for possible alternatives to staying at the monastery for 90 days without the meditation visa. Does anybody know the current (summer 2010) policy on overstaying a tourist visa? Is it $3 per day up to 60 days? Or has this changed like everything else? Alternatively, Is it possible to go to Pa Auk and then ordain as a monk for 90 days without the special visa? Does anybody know?

Thanks,

Rod
