Visa Requirements To Visit Cambodia/Laos

Featured Replies

We are thinking about doing a road trip to Cambodia and Laos

I have a Thai multiple reentry permit and my wife has a Thai passport.

Are there any problems taking a Thai registered car across the borders.

Are any special visas required or are you given a tourist entry visa like in Thailand

Laos is no problem, both of you will get 30 days on arrival, wife free, you $35.

For the car, you'll need the car "passport" obtainable from your local LTD, Land Transport Department, office. It just takes some time to process on both the Thai and Lao sides, then buy cheap liability insurance on arrival in Laos. Better check, too, if your Thai insurance covers the vehicle while in Laos, many to most insurers do not.

Be extra cautious driving in Laos, 2-lane roads and between the occasional pig, chicken, goat, 10 to 22-wheel truck, long haul buses, kids, driving can be scary. If you're not going too far from the Mekong, might be best just to rent a van while there.

Cambodia? There was a post recently on this but I forget which forum it was on, replies were mostly negative, not a good idea.

Thankyou, I was thinking about Cambodia first as its close to where my wife's family lives.

I will take your suggestion about renting sounds less complicated.

Have a great day, Peter

And, if you just want to chase up to Vang Vieng, the great "world traveler's" gathering place, three hours up Rt 13N, your guest house can put you on a Toyota HiAce van with other folks, there's lots of these vans going there all day long.
